I’m looking for an easy way to camp in my Tacoma. I prefer the cab. I’ve seen videos with two platforms (front passenger and rear driver side) and sleeping sideways but I’m not sure this is the best approach. Anyone have any other options? I’m 5’5” so not too tall but still too tall to sleep across the back seats.

@msgs350 how do you do it?

Across the back seat fetal position? Or passenger seat reclined?

I'm sure alcohol helps, no matter the position.

Several Trial runs will find you your preferred set-up...

You may find that laying across the cab works for you. (It has worked well for some of my travel-mates of the smaller stature persuasion...)
But also try leaning the front seat back. - For me, that is the only way I was able to sleep inside in some of my past vehicles.

    Good luck!

And let us what you work out!

    Oh man…
Someone on here, maybe in the truck camping photo thread, removed the passenger front and rear seats and made a bed on that side. Looked awesome, flat and plenty of room.

Back in my single days this set up worked so good. I even cut a foam pad to fit.

Now that I think about it, this thread is really sad. It makes me think of this:

    I've been summoned

    That's me!

My wife has a hybrid camry. When we go anywhere, we take that. She is not a fan of camping all the time. I have a RTT I slap on the bed for when she comes with. Front seat comes out with 4 14mm bolts, and two connectors (seatbelt, airbag).

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...-road-trips-build.712648/page-2#post-26178916

The benefits of it are awesome. I roll into camp, and I'm done. No tent to unfold, no tent to dry out later on, it was only like 150$ for the platform, 40$ for the cushion, vs minimum a grand for a rooftop tent. I can roll into a rest stop and get a couple hours sleep if I need to, it's water tight so I don't have to worry about that at all. I can (and have) scooted directly from the bed into the driver seat and driven off - and visa versa, if it's raining. I have my entire bed, now, for firewood, coolers, bikes, kayaks, whatever.

It's not for everyone. I have an airbag light on because it sees a missing airbag (ooooops). So when I need to do my every-other-year inspection, seat has to go back in. It removes the passenger seat, that's an obvious downfall. But - in theory, when I pull the platform out and put the seat back in, and calibrate the airbags, that will be equal to or less work than putting on/taking off a rooftop tent, which takes up the whole bed. That's the thought, at least.

Cab setup is awesome. I show up to a campsite, and I have a water, wind tight setup. No worries about tents, them being wet, etc. If I'm on a long road trip, if it's downpouring I can pull off, roll over, and my setup for the night is done. I've brought this out to CA and back, about 12 nights - and it's super comfortable.

The picture there is a lounge chair cushion, however I found a set of love seat couch cushions fit perfectly, and are about 6" thick of foam. Genuinely, it's as comfortable as sleeping on a couch.

I am 5' 10" and fit end to end, with my toes JUUUUUST touching the glovebox. If I had a sunroof I'd probably reverse direction so I had the view.

@Amanda55 where are you? I'm using my setup this weekend, then I'm actually pulling it out for a while (as in like, 2 years). If you want to give it a whack you can borrow it, but it's only about 150$ all in to make, so I wouldn't deal with shipping/coming from far away to borrow it.

edit: To clarify, I am in RI but will be in NC for the next two weeks.

More edit: It's in a double cab, turd gen. I like @crazy joker setup - but mind has storage underneath. I usually stuff all my water, first aid, fire ex, clothes, all fits under the platform.

I don't see a point in trying to squeeze into the cab when the bed (in something like a bed tent) would be more accommodating; especially if you have no intention on running the AC or something. If it needs to be in the cab, should have bought a 4R.

(I've only googled the subject so I have no idea if this is a valid video or not!)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWP6za61yXE

Unless you seal up the bed, these turd gen beds are open. There's a ton of entry paths for dust, mud, water. I had a tonneau on in NMW, and my bed was still caked in about 1/8" of dust. It was actually worse closed up, with it open the wind at least cleared out most of it. When it's closed, it gets shoved in there and then it just accumulates.

I also have a wide open bed that I can hit with a pressure washer to clean after it gets filled with mud, trees, rocks, mulch, etc. Can't clean the back of a 4runner with a pressure washer. Otherwise, yeah I don't disagree. 4R vs. Tacoma is no one size fits all. I can't say that my setup is one-size-fits-all either, it removes the passenger seat

I like having the bed, and the utility of the open bed I can blast with a pressure washer to clean it. With a 4R I'd be sitting there thinking "Gosh, I wish I had a bed to toss that into" a lot. I've used the truck as a truck enough to justify it. A 4R (or SUV) just wouldn't be able to handle the same shenanigans I put my truck through, without a utility trailer. But the times I've had a benefit of "randomly" using the bed, I'm not going to just tow a trailer all the time just in case.

College camping was the best camping. No money needed aside from gas and booze, travel everywhere, sleep anywhere, take five minutes to stretch out the sore back and hangover, start the car, and get back on campus just before your AM class.

For me, just flip the headrest 180deg. Great sleeping. Did it a couple times on road trips when I screwed up on timing.
