I have read several threads recently about exhaust systems and how proud people are of their new exhausts. So rather than trolling those threads, I want to see what people generally think about exhausts.

Personally I really don't understand these "dual" exhausts especially on the 4 cyl trucks. But even the 6 cyl brings everything together into a single 2.5 inch pipe before the typical dual exhaust kits split again. Seems to me you are just adding more pipe (aka more weight) under the truck.

I personally think duals on a truck are stupid, JMO.

Agreed that dumping after the axle is the best option, looks clean.

I like stock the best. I'd pay for the reroute to get rid of the low hanging crossover.

Also agree to dump just behind the rear axle if you wheel in the rocks a lot.

This is my only real complaint about the factory system... dumb thing hits every rock on the trail.

That is the only part of the exhaust that really needs to be modified. Had duals on my last Tacoma. Total waste of time and money.

When doing everything up on my last car, as the guy at the speedshop said, "Single for performance, duals for looks." And volume, if you go with straight pipes. I had gone with duals for the look on my car, and the kit had a Y-pipe with two catalytic converters, and two mufflers. So really, it was a lot of extra money in parts to look purty.

It's a pickup truck, not a sports car or muscle car. True duels are kinda pointless, I mean I know these trucks aren't powerless by no means, but how loud do you really want it?

Its actually not as loud as you'd expect Its probably just a bit louder then a 40 series flowmaster. Just a little more rumble to it.

And you got a video you could share with the OP?

I went from a dual 3" flow master 40 set up back to stock. Couldn't be happier, I left the headers and intake on and am super impressed.

It's just a vicious cycle. You upgrade to a loud, brippity-brap exhaust and then you can't hear your stereo. So you upgrade the stereo to drown out the brippity-brap. Then your stereo starts rattling the cab so you lay down all sorts of sound proofing. Sound proofing and stereo drown out the muffler noise so you get an intake to increase brippity-brapness.

Leave it stock and save hundreds if not thousands of dollars.

The vehicle comes with factory tuned exhaust, so my vote is to keep it stock. However, the issue where the exhaust pipe hanging to low and catching rocks in offroad driving is something you'll need to consider.

I've got the I4 in my truck. Before buying it, the old muffler was on it's last leg, so the dealer replaced it before delivery. They bought some aftermarket solutin and the sound from the pipe is a bit annoying. Thankfully, it doesn't sound overly loud, so I'll live with it until the pipes give out. Then back to stock with a Toyota lifetime warranty.

If folks are looking to optimize performance with aftermarket solutions, I personall think it isn't as simple as buying this and replacing that. In order to get improved performance, you'll need to work with someone that knows how to tune an exhaust system. And with that, your performance improvements will be rather modest. Essentially, aftermarket systems are different sounding and mostly louder. In my experience, most on I4 engines sound terrible.

So if you are after loud and different, get an aftermarket system or muffler. If you are after performance, find someone who can build a tuned exhaust system for you or stick with the stock OEM solution (already tuned for your vehicle configuration). Don't be surprised if an untuned system robs you of power and fuel economy. For the looks, you can go with the real or fake dual exhaust solutions; I like the look provided its real (exhaust puffs coming out both pipe tips and not just one when a breeze blows up the other pipe).

Any way you look at it, get what makes you happy after careful consideration. There are many, many posts in forums where folks bought systems with expectations that were never met, largely because they set unrealistic expectations after inadequate research. So read, ask questions, listen to systems at Youtube, and make the right choice for you. Good luck!

The second one is that way for function. If you look at the rear quarter panel, there's a storage bin. Last thing you want to do on a lot of heavy driving is have to start digging around in there with a hot pipe underneath. Also, the advantage to dumping the pipes out the back is less cabin drone. I was driving my 'Stang down the highway, I could listen to the stereo at a moderate volume, and use the hands free stereo, when a buddy called to tell me to turn down "the damn Mustang". He was three cars back, and he heard me before he saw me. But you'd never know it inside the cab.

i think the stock exhaust is the best for all trucks. but if you have a v8 truck then the dual side exhaust just behind the rear tires is the only choice IMO if you want to go aftermarket.

you mean where it cocks up and out to the side?

I think this poll is a little dumb, most catbacks are single exit for our trucks.

I did mine most definately for the look of two pipes-because I always had v8 cars with true duals plus a fullsize Jimmy with a mild Flowmaster dual outlet jobby. I missed all that. Unfortunately, my Tacoma don't have a sound that matches the look:(
