I love suppressors. Very helpful for the shooter. Comfort is better, recoil is less, and lets be honest, they look cool. But do not think that they will make your firearm shoot like in the movies. if you are not shooting sub sonic ammo, you will still hear that sonic crack of the bullet that will be loud enough to hurt your ears over time.

In fact, the only down side i have had is the heat that can be generated. Basically, the Suppressor just redirects hot gasses, allowing them to expand multiple times before the round exits. This gas makes the suppressor VERY HOT. In fact, if you are looking to dump a mag, you can just about guarantee that you wont be grabbing that suppressor for a good 30 minutes or so...

Don't sweat it. Either term is acceptable but suppressor is the more common vernacular among the anal retentive. IMO it's not the same thing as the vaunted 'clip' v 'mag' debate because one of those is actually inaccurate whereas both suppressor and silencer are correct. One is just more correct to some. lol

I've shot everything up to 338LM & 50BMG suppressed and can you tell you that there is a POI shift regardless of weight. The quality of suppressor (and how much R&D the manufacturer puts into POI shift specifically) & attachment device (or shoulder abutment if direct thread) have more to do with POI shift than projectile weight. I've fired 22LR suppressors that have virtually no discernible POI shift and I've fired 50BMG with massive movement of POA/POI.

Honestly, don't waste your time on the oil filter suppressor. If you're going to go the Form 1 route there are FAR better options for rolling your own these days. You can make your own for less than $200 in parts and even a titanium Form 1 suppressor would cost you not much more than $200. Add a stamp for $200 and you have a suppressor that with NFA stamp costs less than most Form 4 suppressors. What you're searching for is solvent traps and kits. You can get them for most firearms and they're 100% legal to own as long as you don't own any formed freeze plugs or anything else that the ATF could consider intent until you have a stamp and approved Form 1 suppressor document in hand. The world of Form 1 suppressors has come an awful long ways since the oil filter days and I wouldn't even waste your time on crap like that when you can build a VERY solid suppressor for less then $200 these days.

Did not know about the heat problem. I guess in a hunting situation it's not a factor though.

I'm not sure why you are so curious about suppressors OP. In Canada a suppressor will land you in jail for up to 2 years... here's the exact punishments right from the criminal code:

    • (i) in the case of a first offence, for a term not exceeding two years, and

    • (ii) in the case of a second or subsequent offence, for a term not exceeding five years

Plus that's only if you were just caught transporting. If you were hunting with one and they managed to pin another crime I think that falls under the more sever rules where the maximum sentence is 14 years.

Here's a link to the code if you want to check for yourself:

Oh man, Canada sucks ball... eh? Now take off OP and stop trying to get us to waste pertinent information on something your government doesn't think you're adult enough to own... hoser!

Meh, I'm okay with the tradeoffs for our laws regarding guns. However a discussion on that is political talk and we all know where that will land us.

I just don't want OP to go and do something stupid like machining his own Siliencer on the assumption that the penalty can't be that bad.

People can be curious about stuff that's not legal for them to have.

Gun mufflers are awesome, Accuracy is generally improved (Group sizes usually get smaller) but as noted there is usually a POA/POI shift for suppressed vs unsuppressed.
There are several theories as to why accuracy improves, but the 2 most common are:
    1. The shooter has less recoil to manage which makes him/her less likely to flinch.
    2. The extra volume of the suppressor allows the gasses to fall away from the bullet in a much more controlled environment than the crown of the muzzle.

22 LR. is hearing safe with a suppressor (Usually 3-6" in length, 1-1.5" diameter, and 3-8 oz's of weight) and extremely quiet with sub sonic ammo.

    Yep
Nothing wrong with taking the next step if you use it legally and don't get caught.
(Note, not advocating illegal use/manufacturing of suppressors)

But you quoted me, hence my laughter.

Anyways like others have said there is nothing wrong with OP's questions I simply wanted to chirp in that curiosity could literally land the cat in jail on this one. The law in Canada is so strict that attaching a potato to the end of a rifle would count as a sound muffler.

Same as here in the US (If the ATF could prove that the potato reduced sound signature by greater than 1 decibel, or there was intent to make the firearm quieter).
