EDITED May 20, 2023: I have remedied this problem on my own truck. All new posts reviving the thread are from other members with a similar problem.

    Original Post:

This isn't the "kazoo" sound from the door seals.

Recently traded my 2019 2wd DCSB Sport for a 2020 4wd DCSB Sport. My 2019 was very quiet on the inside.

On the 2020, once you begin to go ~40mph and up a very noticeable wind noise develops on the driver side. It makes a sound similar to when a window is slightly cracked open. This happens no matter the wind speed of the day (no wind to high winds).

Using blue painters tape, I taped around the window glass where it comes into contact with the door with no change in the noise. Removed the tape. Then I tried taping around the base of the mirror where the base contacts the door. Very slight decrease in the noise. Removed the tape.

Then I taped off the gap between the mirror itself and the body of the truck (see picture). This stopped almost all of the noise.

When you roll down the window you can hear a lot of turbulence in this area. I folded the mirror in and still had the noise albeit not as much.

Anyone else have a similar issue? Any way to remedy this? I wouldn't have thought much of it if my 2019 hadn't been quiet compared to the 2020.

    PXL_20211207_233508579.jpg

    EDIT:
So I've pretty much ruled out the mirror itself and the door seal.

I purchased a new OEM complete mirror assembly and replaced it today with no change. Taped off the front of the door along the weather seal with no change. Taped off the front of the hood, the gap between the driver fender and hood, the trim piece on the windshield, and the gap between the door and body with no change.

It's something to do with the way the air is moving around the truck and mirror.

    Nah...

Maybe try some vent visors for the windows, that could redirect some of the turbulence.

If you are under warranty I would consider a dealer visit. There should be no difference between those two trucks. It is possible a gasket is missing somewhere, or that is was incorrectly installed. It is also possible it is a door seal not the side mirror. You putting tape on the mirror changes the airflow in that general area and could potentially impact another area near it. Not saying that is the case, but something to consider.

Vent visors may possibly help some but not something I really want. Good idea though.

It is under the 36 month/36k mile warranty for another 20 months/22k miles.

I'm afraid taking it to the dealer they will blame it on being "normal" and do nothing even though I know it isn't with direct experience. I guess it's still worth a try, though. Nothing to lose other than time.

Definitely something to consider regarding the seals. Thank you for the input!

    You must have great hearing.
I'm younger and can hear the annoying high-pitch whine from the mirrors but my dad can't. Drives me nuts. Mine and both of his two Tacomas make the same noise.

Sorry to say I have no problem on my Taco with the noise that you guys are talking about but I did install some AVS in the channel low profile maybe that helped but do not recall any noise before I installed them.

For all three Tacos (two 2021's, one 2022), the issue is not the weatherstripping. It's the actual mirror that is making the notice. I think the problem may be the fins.

I had this exact issue with my 2020 drivers side.
Took it to my dealer and had a tech drive it. He could hear what I was hearing so they scheduled it for a repair.
It was the side mirror. They did something to it with felt. I believe it was where it mounts to the truck.
Can't see where they did anything but boy is it nice and quiet now! Doesn't even whistle in a 30mph crosswind.

I had an issue with the driver side door weather stripping making this 'type' of noise. A lot in high speed cross wind. I just added rubber tubing in the existing weather strip for a better seal, haven't had a 'peep" since

A lot of people have had this issue over the years

It's really loud and noticeable. Mine isn't really a high-pitch whine, more so air rushing around the mirror turbulently. I rode passenger side this afternoon and you can hear the wind noise from the driver side while sitting in the passenger seat.

You definitely would know if you had it.

This is good to know. Do you think they removed the mirror and applied felt around where it mounts to the truck?

Neither did my 2019 unfortunately. :bananadead:

This doesn't even have to be in cross winds. It's just driving down the road at 40+ with no/or 3-5 mph winds for the day.

It's the mirror do door seal area.
Take it in to the dealer and have them fix it under warranty or pop the mirror off and reseal it yourself.
I chose to make the dealer fix it as it gets reported back to Toyota. They can then fix the assembly process that is creating the issue if they get enough complaints.

Hm... I haven't checked the passenger sides on the other two Tacomas, but mine makes the noise on both sides of the truck (Driver/Passenger). I just assumed it was normal.

Put on a loud muffler and play some tunes, perhaps some mud tires too. You'll never hear it again!

Open the door and pop the triangle trim off by the mirror. There are a couple holes in the sheet metal. Cover them with good tape. Pop the cover back on. Solved.

Currently have the cover off. Only one hole is open, the one where the wiring runs through it. The other 3 already have a plastic film type deal over them. Honestly don't think that is the issue, however.

Got rid of the most annoying part of the wind noise. Tightened the highlighted bolt on the door handle inside the door as it was slightly loose (not my original picture but my highlight).

    20190124_155332.jpg

This cut down on air penetrating into the door cavity. The air coming in was loud inside the cabin.

Also slightly adjusted how the mirror was aligned/mounted on the truck to match the passenger side.

All that's left is wind noise coming between the mirror and body of the truck. It isn't too bad except on very windy days but the radio at 20 drowns out the majority of it. Rode passenger side and it's about the same so no issue there.

Did have to add some thin foam on the edge inside the mirror cover where it meets the black plastic part of the mirror body to push the body out. That small black piece in the front was slightly indented causing a constant whistling noise after I adjusted the mirror alignment.

Lmao @ that tape picture. Only because I did basically the same thing back when I had a 2nd gen taco trying to track it down.

The thing is with noises in a vehicle is that if it isn’t super obvious, the noise is usually coming from somewhere COMPLETELY different than where it sounds like it is coming from. The sound echoes all over the place off of metal and glass and you’re just hearing where it is reflecting from.

That noise could be coming from a door handle, the bottom or back of the door OR it could becoming from somewhere else like the wheel well or the hood.

My 2nd gen it ended up being from the wheel liner but when you heard it you would have sworn it was the mirror. I was driving around with the whole door panel removed trying to find that shit. That said I did a bunch of adjustments before I got rid of it that reduced the noise, that were contributing to it but not actually the source.
