I thought I would throw up some pics of the side exit exhaust I did yesterday. All I needed was a 45 deg, and a 90 deg pipe bend. I have a regular cab so it got a little tight with the O2 sensor but worked out fine in the end. I just had to move the connector off of the tranny and zip tie it to a hole in the housing. It's strange, I've looked around online and I only found one pic of a side exit on a 1st gen taco. Here Ya go:

in case anyone is wondering, its a flow master 50 delta flow, with 2 1/4" pipe. I would have to say that the back pressure seems to be perfect. it doesn't bang and pop on decel like the magna flow I had in there, and sounds really clean. Also, the reason I did this is because all of the welds cracked on my magnaflow muffler within 6 months of install. It was like they welded the stainless can with regular mig wire from the factory. bad idea. I got it replaced under warranty through Amazon, but still a pain in the ass.

Video or sound clip? I tried to get my muffler man to do a side exit like this, but he didn't have the bends on hand and when he tried to make it one piece it didn't work out well. So he tucked it up high all the way and dumped it out the back.

I love it. Keep in mind that I've been driving it with a cat only for 3 months so I'm ready for some peace. It's still got a throaty sound but it's somewhat tame. It still sounds like a truck which is nice.

No popping or backfiring. I will never go back to magnaflow...

OP- I've been thinking about doing something similar... how close to the bed and frame does the pipe run? I'd just be worried about it possibly rattling against the frame and driving me crazy. haha

Need pics please! I just scrolled through your build page and didn't see any... I think this could be a pretty badass option.

Damn I guess I don't have many pics of that. I think I was doing a lot of mods at that time and didn't take many pics. My truck is an hour away currently but I will be driving to get it either later this week or next week (hopefully) and will update with pics then!!

is it possible to do this to the stock exhaust without making it noisy?

I don't think there's enough room using the stock muffler.

If you have an ext cab, you might be able to make it work if you had the stock muffler relocated as close as possible to the rear O2 sensor... you'd have to get underneath and take some measurements tho. Or you could research into a smaller muffler thats quiet.

its pretty close. If you can get a 90 degree bend and one thats more like a 50 degree. the 45 I used made things a little tricky. I still need to get the hangers right, but I did this all in about 3 hours after work so I'm ok with it for now :cookie monster:

Ill try to upload a vid to youtube when I have a moment

Any drone on the highway? I've had some turn-down exhausts that were just miserable. I like where this exits though. No chance to interfere with the rear suspension etc. Very clean.

It looks good OP but does it put unnecessary heat into the tire? I would be concerned with it causing the tire to run hotter than the other three and causing more wear on any tire that is in front of it.

Is generally not the best idea to dump the exhaust right underneath the body.

people cut their exhaust in front of the axle all the time (under the bed of the truck) and don't have any issues.

My pics will be coming soon.. just got word my shocks are getting shipped back today so i should have the pics up sometime next week.

I guess this is really all i have from my build.. i basically took the same path that the OP did. i didn't have to move my muffler that close to the cat though.

Dumping underneath the truck can lead to faster rust growth on body parts not 100% covered. But lots of people do this and go many years without issue. There may never be any issue, but the constant exposure to the exhaust gases is more corrosive than not. I personally wouldn't dump it underneath. But as long as there is a way for the exhaust away from the truck it shouldn't be a problem.

So y'all seem to know a little about welding up exhaust... I've taught myself how weld reasonably well at this point and was gonna try and do my exhaust to save cash.. But am I reading it really guy that you can't do it with standard mig? I've only got an el-chepo harbor freight welder and flux core wire right now...
