That sounds like what I'm seeing. I took the truck and the same 5,000 lb boat/trailer out again today but took it on repeated steep climbs for my area with the air conditioning on. My results weren't great, but they weren't alarming either.

Probably only 60-120 seconds were spent above 230, but when it did go above 230 it peaked at 236. Running with the AC on made a big difference and is likely the typical scenario for me wheel running at highway speeds.

That's the Torque Converter outlet. I stopped monitoring pan temp because it was always lower.

I don't think you have much to worry about with 236 at the torque converter. I was seeing 230 in the pan. I did monitor my torque temps as a way to tell when the torque converter unlocked.

Torque, Page 9 has good info. I had to buy the pro version for $5 to get the custom PID to work.

Between the $5 for the app and a $22 ODB2 Bluetooth connector, it was worth it compared to getting an ultragauge for reading temps.

I will say though, it cooks my phone battery with bluetooth constantly on and the screen constantly on. It eventually gets my phone so hot that it starts thermal throttling, so I don't use it more than an hour or so. Wouldn't be ideal for a cross-country road trip or anything.

This question has been in my head for a while. How does time spent at 230F degrade the oil when it usually runs between 165-195F almost all the time except when towing? I haven't found anyone who can answer it with facts and statistics.

How long are you running in an unlocked converter gear before you get to 235F? I have a third gen with a thermostat and it opens at 195F. I would hit 235F when climbing in 3rd gear but when I pinned open the thermostat, so it's like the second gen where it pumps fluid to the cooler all the time, I max out at 210F out of the converter

I wouldn't be too concerned about torque converter temps. It's the pan temps exceeding 230 I would be concerned about.

Any one know for sure where the scanguage II gets it temp reading from? Pretty sure it is the torque converter cause it can raise and lower pretty quickly when I hit a climb and feel it unlock. But want to make sure as I am on my second trans. I did hit 225 this weekend pulling to the top of scout mountain with the new camper. It was a slow long 2nd gear, 20 mph, 2.5 mile climb. A buddy came up Sunday in his 1500 chev pulling his lighter camper and he hit 228. But I am not sure where chev pulls their number from either. It is an option on his digital display from the factory.

Also I do run a large external cooler (stock 05 Dodge 2500 cooler) in addition to the factory baby cooler.

TF1 is the pan. TF2 is the exit of the torque converter

It doesn't give the option to pick with sensor I want to monitor. It just lists the main code and 3 alternate codes for the x-guage function. That is why I was wondering if anyone knew what sensor they tied into. My truck is an '06 if that helps any. But the trans is out of a 2014. HMMMMMMMM

If it spikes and then drops when you lock up it's TF2

For trans fluid, the next flush-n-fill I'll go with Amsoil ATF. I had my trusty Toyota dealer do the full flushes with OEM Toyota WS fluid, but I believe Amsoil holds up better at high temps.

Whats your coolant temp average while towing? Towed my trailer up to about 3000ft, in 100 degree weather and peaked at 214 degrees. Made me a little nervous watching the water temp rise lol. When towing in fair/moderate temps mine averages about 194-201, not towing im 185-194.

What was your rpm? My coolant drops about 10F when my rpm increases with a down shift. You want the coolant in and out of the engine as fast as possible.

Pic from last Wednesday as I was about to head out for the dunes at Coos Bay in oregon. Truck tows so much better now that I have the Deaver Expedition Stage 3 leaf springs and Bilstein 5160s, even with the Habitat, Camping Supplies, and the wife's "new" Ace.

Average RPM....3k, maybe a tad higher at times. Climbing some pretty steep grades in the sierras.

It actually shows it in that screenshot. 210 peak, 200 at the time of the screenshot. It usually is 190-195 but definitely soiled on an uphill climb I did there with the AC on.

That's pretty good engine so speed for coolant movement. Maybe the 4.0 just makes more heat than the new 3.5. I've never been passed 210F and I've climbed some stupid steep stuff

Yea i saw that. Was more curious if that was your "normal" or average coolant temp when towing. Interesting to compare all of our temps!
