A buddy of mine at work has been experimenting with a 3D printer and making some neat stuff, but nothing overly useful (yet). I've seen folks on here printing parts for their Tacos and was hoping we could consolidate that into one thread, maybe share files or whatever?

So, if you've made anything you think deserves to be shared, let's see it!

Did you create the radius bends through trial and error, manual measurement or? I have a lot of time (academic) in Solidworks, but I have yet to create something that fits into another part with essentially unknown dimensions.

Combination of both. Took about 5 or 6 revs to get it to where I like it. Pulled the piece out of the truck and determined the draft angle (ended up being about 5 degrees per face, 10 degrees total. Measured from the "tabs" inside that compartment to the edge surface, front and back, to come up with the "wedge" shape of the part. I use those surfaces as a datum. I used the original rubber inserts to get initial radii measurements, and massaged over a few revs to get it where I like it.

Mechanical Engineer by trade so I reverse engineer / prototype regularly. Most of the stuff i design is much much smaller. Small electric motors for moving laser beams is what I work on on a day to day basis. www.scannermax.com

Tree is fairly simple. Could simplify more if I totally remade the part, but I started by sketching and hacking until I liked it. Shape is actually a (bunch) of undefined splines... not best practice, but I never planned on selling these like I am now. I was just trying to make a quick one-off for my own truck.

According to my notes it was 11 revs, but I think I only printed about 6 or 7 to get to a usable part. I've revised it 3 times since going to significant production, all revs having to do with how much the top surface sticks above / is recessed into the console.

Awesome. Yeah I see the undefined radii. I suppose when maintaining GD&T isn't a priority, what does it matter. I'm in my last semester for a BS in MET, so insight into real-world applications is helpful.

Haha. Exactly. This was originally me just poking around on a lunch break, since I only planned on making one for myself... I didn't think it would be as popular as it ended up becoming, after I shared it in a facebook group.

Nice. That’s about $3,600 over my budget. The 3D printer we use at work isn’t even that nice and we print all day everyday. I bet it’s nice though.

    1. Tonneau cover rail extenders. The existing rails were leaking water into my bed near the tailgate, so I 3D printed an insert that clips into existing slots.

    2. USB-C switch blank. I have an aftermarket stereo, and the cable used to hang out of a hole in the dash.

    3. Still working on it, but a custom gas can mount that will go inside of the spare tire. Will update with pics when done.

How durable is the plastic? I was considering designing a bezel/pocket for my foglights. The 3.5" round squadrons are going into a 4" round orifice on my Allpro bumper. The gap all around and exposed bracket make the Squadrons look cheap.

But I am concerned that the plastic would take a beating from rocks/debris. Are there tougher plastics you can print with?

Truth be told, even PLA is pretty durable. I've made strut spacers for a rally car out of PLA (dumb, I know), and they held up fine. You can also look into printing with ABS, but then you have to worry about fumes and ventilation.

Almost finished my gas can holder today. :) Will mount it under the truck later. Sorry for all the huge pictures.
