    Show me your awning set-ups!!!!

I didn't see a specific post (hopefully didn't miss it lol) on this topic when searching so thought I'd start one.

I just finished installing a Prinsu CabRack on my 2021 MGM TRD OR and am now shopping around for the perfect awning to compliment it. The goal over the next year is to add an RTT on a low-profile bed rack with an overall two-toned MGM/Matte Black slim-lined theme so I'm trying to see what ideas and set-ups people are running.

Did you have a preference for the side you mounted it (driver's/passenger's) and if so, why?

How does your choice hold up in rain/sun/etc?

Let's see those sexy pics! (Of your taco awnings... or the ones you want... please keep your clothes on... for all our sakes)

I took the DYI route on mine. If you want to see how I built it, I have a video on YT. Traveling by Tacoma. Good luck with your truck build out.

Just watched the video on your channel, very nice sir! Couple questions: Besides the obvious joy of building it yourself and the cost, why did you decide to build one as opposed to buying one? 11 months later, how are you liking it? Anything you would change on your design or materials? What's the worst weather you've operated it under and at what point would you feel comfortable keeping it deployed vs taking it down?

Zero Peregrine 180R awning. Mounted to the pax side since my tent opens driver side. Freestanding which is hella nice, but has some super simple poles that come down for support in wind, etc. Setup is less than 2 mins by myself and takedown is almost as short. Price is pretty killer too.

Downside is its a batwing style so its 2x as tall as the roll out ARB style, but thats a con across the market for this type of design. The juice is still worth the squeeze for me though.

It is a bit tall, but I like that coverage and options it gives. Wish they had some different color options but I know that's hard to come by.

Yeah, one time dealing with a buddies huge rollout ARB style on his excursion had me looking batwing with no second thoughts. Talk about a pain in the ass. Also, the ARB ones look super silly on Tacomas cuz of how narrow it has to be to fit on the side of the cab unless you accept overhang over the hood or something. Like hanging a sheet of plywood lengthwise off the side.

Hahaha. I've been wondering why it looked "off" in a some of pictures I've looked up. It seems like you have to have the rest of your setup squared away and sleek to make it all flow together. (By the way... I know a fed when I see one. You're busted.)

Thanks. I'm just the type that would rather build it myself if I can. I was lucky enough to build my own house, re-did my small Whaler boat (you can see it on my fishing vids) etc. I was a home builder for years before I got a comfy corporate job so now I just send emails and point the finger. Not complaining, its great, so any chance I get to build with my hands I do.

We left the awning out during a long hike away from camp and the wind got nuts... Got back to camp and it was bent to hell. Did a field fix to get it home, packed it all back up and when I got home I bent it all back into shape and its good as new. It would have been fine in the wind but my anchors were in sand and they pulled out. I'm happy with it, its unique-ish and was a fun challenging build.

Does anyone simply hook a tarp to the truck and a tree or two? I've been thinking about putting eyebolts in my cap and then using paracord and carabiners to put a tarp up. I imagine a few poles would suffice if no trees are around. Anyone out there use a setup like that? Please post pictures if you do!

I've seen LLOD (Last Line of Defense YouTube channel) do it on a few of his Weekenderlander videos when it's been raining and he needs to use the bed of his truck to cook. It has obvious pooling issues but it can work if/when needed.

I've been using a Rhino-Rack Dome 1300 awning (https://www.rhinorack.com/en-us/products/sport-leisure/shade/awnings/dome-1300-awning_32125) for the last two seasons and it has been great.

I've had it up in howling wind and rain storms (25+ mph winds) with no issues.

The dome design gives one a lot more headroom underneath which is important to me since I mounted it fairly low.

I also picked up two of Rhino-Rack's fitted sidewalls for it (https://www.rhinorack.com/en-us/products/sport-leisure/shade/accessories/dome-1300-side-wall_32131). I use those to increase the shade when the sun is low or to block the wind when it is cold out.

I'm liking this this more and more. I won't be able to use it until I buy and set up the bed rack and tent in a few months but that thing is sick.

That's not a bad price and I've had luck with Rhino in the past. I like the side wall option as well.
