Hello All. I want to ask you fine folks for your opinions and experience.

I currently drive a 2022 Nissan Frontier SV 4x4. This was my first truck, I am a city-boy who moved out to the country. I was not sure how I'd like a truck, but I'm 14 months in and so far I have LOVED having it.

I wanted it for hauling stuff, driving in the snow and maybe going off-road once and a while. I have a Mazda CX-5 that I drive to work during the week, so the truck is more a weekend vehicle for me.

Here is my problem: For the first 12-13 months the Frontier have been problem free, but over the last month I have had several minor issues:

    1. There is a recall to fix a faulty transmission pawl issue
    2. My center console cover latch broke
    3. I am getting a periodic "System Fault" light that seems to be the result of a faulty ABS sensor.
    4. My Apple Carplay has suddenly stopped working

Needless to say I am getting frustrated. I am still under warranty, so getting all of this fixed will only cost me time, but it sure makes me wonder about the QC at Nissan.

So, in your opinion should I:

    1. Keep my Frontier and power through the minor issues
    2. Trade right now for a 2023 Tacoma
    3. Wait for the 2024 redesign

I am looking forward to hearing your opinions and reasons.

    Thank you!

I would only because I refuse to ever own the first year of a new generation vehicle

Have you driven a Tacoma ? The 9 speed and the torquier 3.8 may have you singing songs of the past

I wouldn't wait for the 2024 redesign - it will most likely have gremlins as all new model-updates do.

I absolutely love my 2021 SR5 Access Cab.

Side by side at the end of the day the Nissan Truck should last quite a while. I looked at the Ranger, the Nissan, and the Tacoma and
after a lot of consideration ( as a three-time-toyota owner anyway ) went with the Tacoma.

If the financial aspect works out even I'd go Toyota. The value is there and will stay there.

They sound like small issues to me. Unless really needed, I would not keep buying vehicles in this particular climate. Heck, even the interest rates may have changed considerably since you last checked.

I would consider that you bought the first year of the new frontier, there will be issues and bugs. No vehicle is exempt from issues. This will eventually get worse due to the complexity of automobiles. Unless you're at your wits end, I would see what Nissan does with it first.

@MountainApe, the only compelling reason I can come up with to switch to the Tacoma is if you want a manual transmission; other than that, stay with your current truck.

You should. Your truck has very minor issues that will surely be addressed by the stealer at some point.

the frontier imo has a far superior (from a driving experience) powertrain for a truck. Unless you get a manual in the taco.

let us know your thoughts once you drive one. You’re on a Tacoma forum so you’ll just get 100 posts shitting on Nissan

I used to have a Frontier and then I moved to a Tacoma and I would never go back. The quality is night and day. Back during my Frontier days, the truck was fine, never left me stranded over 7 years of ownership, but there were quality issues ( passenger side power window stopped working the 3rd year, the truck had noises all over the place). It wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t a Tacoma.

I might test drive one this weekend, I have actually thought about renting one for a few days to really get a feel for it.

That maybe an even better option… you really want to spend some time on the freeway between 55-70mph… that’s where the 6AT and a high revving V6 really shine :anonymous:

Yeah the taco really does drive weak. A regear turned the truck into what I wanted though

I am also really confused about the various trim levels and options on Tacoma right now, it seems like there are a lot more choices than on the Nissan side. Having choices is good, but can also be confusing.

Nissan quality and quality control has been shaky for many years and has consistently been falling in the past 7-10 years now. The powertrain is nice until the transmission blows up. I wouldn't wait on a 4th gen Tacoma though. As stated by the first commenter it's a solid idea to never buy the first model year of a new generation.

That being said if you like the Tacoma you could trade your Frontier and probably be close to even on cost. Then after a few years your Tacoma would be worth more than the Nissan when comparing depreciation and you'll have a truck worth more to get into a 4th gen Tacoma a couple years down the road.

Sorry I had to take a work call before I finished my thought:

On the other side of the coin- the market is high, so if you feel like you will never be happy with the Nissan, you can get good money for it now,,, of course you will very likely be overpaying for it's replacement. Heck you have a commuter, maybe sell the Nissan and wait til this house of cards economy collapses and then buy someone out of their loan for way less?

Nissans are reliable, every vehicle has problems, but Nissan is dead to me. I bought a 1 year old CPO Infiniti years ago, and it needed a new transmission, and all kinds of other clutch, bell housing updates (proof there was a problem due to the revisions) and they wouldn't do squat.

Yes you should. Nissan quality/longevity just isn't what they used to be in the 80s/90s.
