I have a base 2017 Tacoma Double Cab 4x4. Mods are as follow: FN 5 star wheels, 17x275x70 BFG's, Stage 2 Bilstein 6112 suspension kit with medium old man EMU medium leaf springs, sos concepts low profile front bumper, 9500 winch, sos concept rock sliders.
    Hi All,

I just did my first spark plug replacement on my 2017 Tacoma. I found in the process that two of the spark plugs were lose when taking them out. Oh that sinking feeling when I braced to break the plug lose and found no resistance...... The coil pack for those two plugs was very discolored. I am attaching a picture for reference. I am also attaching a picture of the plugs. I will let you figure out which coil packs and plugs were the lose ones :) My question is should I replace the coil packs or is the discoloration just cosmetic? Thanks for any insight or feedback!!!!

This is like the third or fourth report of loose plugs. After the first couple, I got spooked and checked mine. All were good other than the feeling of the dry threads. Some antisieze fixed that.

I don't know what the test measurements are for the packs. You might look in the Service Manual?

If it was running fine otherwise, I would just continue to use them.

Thanks!!!! It runs fine (and did even when they were loose). I might just bite the bullet and do the replacement and then keep the 4 that are not discolored as my backups. I can say for sure I will be checking the plugs tension more often then every 40k now :)

Yeah, this. No driveability complaints then re-use em.

    Buy a service manual.
    Buy a multimeter.
Test the resistance as specified in service manual.

Then you'll know whether or not you need to waste several hundred dollars on new coil packs.

you should never ever use anti-seize on spark plugs. you can easily over tighten them and risk stripping the threads in the head.

I agree. The page actually does not tell you NOT to use anti seize, it just tells you they do their own treatment. All I know, is aluminum and stainless steel hate each other, with or without the secret sauce.

I love when people make this claim then proceed to install the plugs with a cheapo torque wrench that has a tolerance way larger than any marginal change in torque caused by a pea sized smear of anti-seize.

Not saying that you do this, but unless your absolutely gobbing the silver stuff on the threads, its not gonna matter.

That said, sometimes I use it, sometimes I dont, then torque to 13 lb ft regardless.

    hey you do you.

I only use it when installing plugs on a cast iron head. Plugs tend to “become one with the head” if not.

Doesn't matter because Loctite can't handle the heat anyway.

Just don't be dumb, add a lil, and don't go crazy on the torque.

I always use a very small amount of copper based antiseize.

Meh. It's one of those things that's comes with experience, either u get burned and never do it again, or you don't have an issue and it works for you. Only so far paper and studies and theory can get you in the real world.

With an ohmmeter, you can read the resistance on the good coil packs and use as reference (if you don't have a manual) to see if the other ones are within range..
