So I've been having some trouble with my truck, a 98 2.7 4x4. It had been periodically stalling at a low idle, and running a bit off. I brought it in to get checked, and was told that my injectors were clogged and would need to be replaced, at a cost of about $1000. I believe that he's right about the injectors being fucked, the fuel filter was the stock toyota one, after 150,000 miles.(I didn't know this, was led to believe it had been changed by the previous owner.) Anyways, I want to know if its worth getting this done at this shop, the price seems ridiculous to me. I know I can buy the injectors much, much cheaper, but I don't know if I'd be able to install them myself. I don't have a ton of mechanical experience, but I can follow a good set of instructions well. What do you guys think, is it doable myself, should I look to get it done else where, or bite the bullet?

Shouldn't cost that much for 4 injectors. Depending on your skill you could do it.

what is the cost of a flow test ? check around, yank your injector(s) and bring
them somewhere for a quick flow check. with the right equipment should take
just a few minutes to tell if they are crap or not

ask around, $1000.00 is a hefty 'guess' unless you yourself see the injectors dribble instead of spray

get junkyard injectors if you need them replaced

I'll check around to see who can do a flow test, I'm living in whistler so pretty everything is overpriced here to. Does anybody know of a guide to removing my injectors?

I'd be running a concentrated amount of fuel system cleaner through it and see if it frees up the injectors, first.

DO NOT LET THIS GUY REPLACE YOUR INJECTORS.

I"m from whistler BC. Ya I didn't let the shop do anything. Another option would be to buy the injectors myself and get a shop to install them, cause they were saying they would cost 175 apiece to buy, plus installation, but I can find the parts online for 45 apiece.

Buy them yourself and watch videos or get a book. Or take a ton of pics and post them. We can walk you through it!

For shits and giggles I'd replace the EGR valve, too. [IMG]

    My same thought!
Run some fuel injector cleaner, and dry gas, or seafoam in a tank or two of gas, and go from there. Maby clean the throttle body also.
I've run three 4-cyls.; 2>186,000 mi., 1>227,000 mi., and never had a problem with the injectors.

they are pretty easy to pull. the hard part is
pulling all the other crap off to get to them.

it is plug-n-play like a spark plug, but with gas inside

Personally I would NEVER put junk yard injectors into a vehicle. You have no idea how long they have been sitting with fuel in them, and getting all gummed up. Too risky in my opinion.

If you like I will post what I can tomorrow on how to replace injectors on your truck. It is a simple job, and you will be maybe looking at 2 hours tops to do the job yourself depending on what hand tools you have, and your skill level.

So i'm just ordering the parts now, got a little busy and put it off. I should get them in a week or so. Any guides or tips would be awesome. Are there any special tools I will need that I should buy as well, I just have a standard socket set.

    Jesus, yes.

Even the hardest job is made easier with the right tools and the easiest job is made impossible with incorrect tools.

As a caveat, I've never done injectors on a Tacoma, but I have done them on my old 4.6L SOHC Mustang.

My recommendation on tools would be:
    • quality metric socket set - at least 8-19mm
    • ratchet extensions 3,6,9 in.
    • a telescoping magnetic wand
    • fuel line disconnect tools
    • rags
    • a pair of needle nose pliers
    • 2 or 3 sizes of flat head screwdriver
    • wobble extensions
    • a flashlight or light
    • torque wrench
    • penetrating lube/oil
    • carb cleaner
You can get most if not all of the above at places like SEARs and Harbor Freight for less than a $100.

is your truck throwing any codes? the codes will tell you what area to look into. it may be an ignition, MAF or throttle body issue. Or even an exhaust O2 problem. a lot of things can cause your syptoms.
