Was down in Baja over the weekend and saw this 1st gen for sale for $2,500. Owner is American and used it for local fishing and grocery runs. Not sure what year, but it runs, has a 22RE motor, automatic, 153k mi, and 4wd. The paint is in decent condition but there’s a decent amount of rust on the frame. Typically this much rust would be a deal breaker, but for $2,500?!? Is it worth it? I don’t know much about 1st gens, would love to make this a project car. Any thoughts?

Yes. Sure, it'll have things to deal with, but it runs, arguably the best engine Toyota ever made, and is a classic. I'd buy it. As long as the frame isn't going to break in half. It's a cheap mistake to make if it doesn't work out.

It needs some TLC but that looks like a decent project vehicle.

I’m loving all the support, so much that I’m pulling the trigger! I hope the frame is still in decent shape. I plan on pulling the body off and removing all the rust possible, then POR-15 everything.

I’ve never owned a 1st gen, any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Well, I got married back in October, holidays, etc. so progress has been slow. Rebuilt the starter, threw a new battery in and she fired right up! I did new fluids, filters, plugs, wires, and belts. I’ve actually got something big planned this weekend, Chevy 63 swap!

    Anyways, here’s some progress photos…IMG_9242.jpg IMG_8472-2.jpg IMG_0092.jpg IMG_1770.jpg

I owned one, taking the top off is hilariously useless. Only the rear passengers get the wind haha.

I loved it, sold it due to mega rust issues. I really wanted to replace the rear leaf springs but the rust was too scary.
