So i have a 2006 taco with the 4.0. I want to install a flow master 40 series and would like to shorten the exhaust system to dump in front of the rear axle. However i am unsure how short is too short in regards to back pressure issues and loss of power. Any guidance would be much appreciated.

The length will not affect the power as much as the change in the type of muffler. Also you have to be sure it will pass inspection in your state. Some states that would not pass.

Won't loose any power, but get ready for a nice annoying drone inside the cab. I had mine dumped before the axle with an AERO muffler for a while and didn't like it. I have magnaflow run out the back now and like it better.

Luckily my state doesn't require a vehicle inspection of any kind. I hear rumor of the exhaust system being an odd size on my truck such as a 2.398". Do you know if it will mate up with a 2.5" without major redneck engineering?

Hmmmm i may have to reconsider shortening them then. Was the drone totally unbearable or just got old after some time?
Also how obnoxious will removing my cats make it?

Wasn't awful, just got annoying if you're driving for a while. Plus i had to turn up the radio pretty load to hear alot of the time. I think some people that rode with me were annoyed with it too. You might like it if you like that kinda thing, i personally just didnt. These v6's can put out some noise.

is that a huge issue with the 4.0 cause i have had them on multiple V8s and never had a problem with restricted exhaust flow?

What do you guys think of this? I'm also going to dump my exhaust in front of the axle to make room for an auxiliary fuel tank. I was going to have a shop cut it off and weld on a down turn so the exhaust exits toward the ground.
I just saw this at a local auto parts store for like $8. What are your thoughts?

Too poor to list anything interesting.
Is it because of the sharp edges?

it's a metric size exhaust. 2.5 won't even be close. I'd say screw the muffler and buy a couple 20" MRBP resonators and dump it short. You'll have to take it somewhere to have something fabricated to accommodate going from the metric to 2.5 or try and find an aftermarket maker that will sell you a piece from the flange to the muffler inlet ONLY. I bought the DBX kit and it was so loud inside it unbearable, the added resonator made it so much better, deeper tone, and less raspy. I considered the 2 resonator setup, but couldn't find one 2.5 in 3 out to replace the flowmaster muffler and I want stock dump location.

That cheap thing will break within a month and is total junkyard, demo derby, white trash, redneck, and every other stupid name one can think of.

Just cut it after the stock muffler and throw on a turn down.
