College wasn’t an option for me, no money. Looking back I wish I would have joined the Marines when I got out of high school.

Bed led, under hood led, secondary auxiliary panel,
I was a meat cutter in high school at the Winn-Dixie, family friend with the manager. Learned how to process every thing, deer included in that shop. Then it went to no breakdown so that was cool. Did that for a year after while in fire Academy and then been in the fire service ever since. Did go back to get my paramedic. And the some crazy reason became a RN. Worked a 2nd job in the local er as a medic and Rn for 18 years but still love the fire side 21 years in
I am glad I learned to cut meat though

Morning crew. Not sure what the day brings. I've got some shop work going on but not sure what supervision has in store. Yesterday a site wide email was sent out for areas to clean. Usually lands on us mechanical maintenance slugs...

Here’s the cane mill shaft that the customer welded, not to bad actually. Not sure why he didn’t do both.

This is what I was talking about, for reference. Get it to where it’s cutting a full flat across and go half the depth of the key from there.

Nice! I wasn't able to go that deep per cut because of how much runout the chuck/spindle on this mill has. If I went deeper than .050 it would start oscillating the entire mill.
Edit: The .5 end mill probably made a .6 wide keyway

We have talked about this many times….
Your boundaries will be abused until you have a cot there and alone in your private life.
    Seen it happen..
Your not a emt, fireman, police, lineman. It’s not a community emergency.
    3 hours sleep is a candle burner…
I regret many of my employment decisions during my career to “go beyond “
    Except for one.
That became the new normal until like 10 years ago I said no more.
I missed all that me time because I was stupid.
Don’t be stupid like I was..

I struggled with this until the last couple years. I thought I had to be at work and not miss any of it. It wasn't because of work, it was because of the money. If I wasn't making X amount then I couldn't make it, I learned that isn't true and have no problem taking off from the machine shop now. I'm still stuck working in the store though, hopefully that will change in the near future.

I also had a side welding business and worked 5-7 hours after working 8 hours at the shop. I have learned to say no to people now.

I have a special spot in my heart for machinists….
I did ok when I was building race engines etc and I had that equipment at my fingers.
It wasn’t really super hard stuff, just exacting..
So many things I’d love to have built.
Much respect to all of you…

    On Edit:
If anyone decides to move northeast make sure you bring
    All your lathe, millers, etc.
    Barter is available. Lol

I got so caught up in my "important responsibilities" that I forgot about life for 15 years.

Ultimately my reward for being so wonderfully responsible and dependable was exactly the same as the temp service employees -- a turkey at Thanksgiving. I was a fool.

The pisser for me is that I'm scheduled for 12 hour shifts, which is fine. But when we get holiday pay like tomorrow, they only pay for 8 hours at regular rate, rather than the 12 hours of OT that I'm actually missing for the holiday. I get that it's not all about money, but that makes a dent in the wallet when it's near holiday/gift time of year.
