Is this being discussed? I didn't see a thread on it. Apparently out of the TNGA vehicles, the Tacoma is the only one with this design. All the rest have frame-mounted bump stops. Seems like a weak design.

I'll watch a rerun, What bump stop design does the LC 250 use? I thought I saw the answer posted, but I can't recall.

What other vehicles have internal bump stop shocks? The 4G Tacoma is the only vehicle that I'm aware of with this design. I can't believe it's an all new way to design shocks.

The suspension is similar to the Tundra and Land Cruiser 250, but both of those use frame-mounted bump stops. Toyota could easily accommodate the switch to a similar design in the coming model years of the Tacoma - but will they?

I imagine those with some welding experience could likely also buy the lower arm from a LC and weld on the bump-stop frame supports.

Seems strange to me that Toyota is using two different designs with the bump stops, but two completely different trucks built on two different sides of the world.

I prefer the external bumps out of familiarity, and they sound more robust. Not so much with OEM, but with the aftermarket and AM coilovers needing to be design with the internal bump.

This is the most interesting thing about the 4G IMO, I'll be watching to see if the design changes.

I think all these piggy back internal bumpstop shocks are mickeymouse.

It's like they created this bizzaro shock type so that they could have aftermarket name brand suspension on their trucks (not just toyota)

And then the aftermarket still has something to offer owners (normal external resi type)

Not that I was planning on keeping the shocks it came with...

Its just marketing gimmicks- look here on the Pro, you have 3 settings!

Notice that they arent integrated into the truck in any way electronically because they know that the real offroaders will be taking them off.

The only real upgrade on the TH and Pro suspension is the upper control arms and Id be curious to know what kind of extra travel or articulation they provide over the stock ones.

Like how many degrees more does it yield?

Ive wandered off topic... internal bumpstops not working out doesnt seem like a big suprise, I'm glad someone found a cheap fix

What I wonder is the shock tower's strength to absorb hard bottom outs. It has to be considerably less robust than than the frame. I could honestly see Toyota saying they made that hat piece designed to fail before potentially causing damage to the tower. If that's the case, then using the Icon solid hat could cause more damage. The biggest question is, why did they make the Tacoma different, and less robust, than everything else?

Definitely a design flaw, you can see where the cap broke at each indent. Also, looks like cheap cast aluminum pot material. A nice stainless steel or high alloy carbon steel cap would fix it.
