Will drop off at port in San Diego or LA. Will pick up at port in Honolulu.

Vehicle has a bed rack that is installed on the bed railing system with bolts. Will have roof top tent installed. Total bed height with tent and rack installed will be 75.5 inches. Tacoma cab height is 70.6 inches.

I’m getting responses saying this may not be done however I’ll like to know if anyone has ever done this and any advice will greatly be appreciated

First thing you need to do is ask the specific reason they will not. Too tall? Too much extra bits that can break for the insurance level?

    Aloha from Hawaii.

I would call Pasha or Matson to confirm. I think you could get away with the rack but not the tent. Also is it sitting on stock suspension/lift?

PS: Nice long boy, its going to bitch to park out here!

My experience of shipping my taco from oahu (where I was stationed) to Garland, TX was quite easy. Mind the level of fuel, iirc it has to be 1/4 tank or less. Before this, my experience shipping my 2nd gen taco to hawaii from garland, was equally easy. Annote ALL damage before signing paperwork. I cannot speak on the bed rack... As for a long bed in Oahu... a but painful in downtown Honolulu but not bad. Enjoy island life!

Lift, wheels, aftermarket suspension, all play into getting an Hawaii tag. If you have stock stuff, take it with you. Chances are, you will need them.. Daughter in the Navy did...good luck.

The biggest constraint is overall height. If you want it in a space that will be farthest from salt, keep it as low as possible. They can then put it in one of the upper decks that has multiple doors to get to. If you really want the tent mounted on the top of the rack and cant make height, you risk the truck going in a more salt exposed area. They might also charge you more since you would be taking the place of potentially higher dollar cargo.

Is there any reason why you couldnt put the tent in the bed under the rack and strap it down?

And Soft Taco is right about the fuel. Make sure it's at whatever level they specify.
Oh and dont leave anything in the truck you wouldnt miss when you pick it up in hawaii.

I’ll add more context to this from my time living there. Lifts and aftermarket stuff is fine. The locals go crazy on some of their mega wide stance lifted Tacomas. What gets you the most is the requirement to cover any tire rubber that extends past (outside of) the wheel wells. Many people just get garden liner from Home Depot, use it as temporary wheel well covers, get tags then remove it all. Can they still get a ticket, yes, but it’s not so common.

I don’t believe any accessories can ship with the vehicle that aren’t permanently affixed. Granted, it’s been 5 years for me since I shipped a vehicle.

Anyone know ballpark costs? Is it by weight or just fixed per vehicle? For Hawaii to the west coast.

Hear me now… DO NOT give your email or phone number to one of those quote sites. You’ll get spammed by dozens of shipping companies for literally months.

best guess, 1200-1800. Maybe less maybe more. Search for recent Reddit posts for similar sized vehicles to get a good idea.

Check out the Pasha website: https://www.pashahawaii.com/. Choose the "Ship A Car" option. They can give you all the details about height requirements and what can and cant be installed. Im sure you will be able to ship it but it might cost you more.

So regarding mounting the tent on top. The companies who I talked to were specific that everything must be removed from the vehicle and nothing shall be left. Either in or outside the truck. If I mounted the tent it’s technically secured onto the truck rather than having it in the bed. I’m still waiting to hear if the rack is acceptable.

How are you shipping? Container? RoRo? If container, they have high cube. You could probably open up the tent in that also. RoRo should be ok with height. But make sure all parts are still on the truck when you pick it up. Some parts may walk away …

OP- i shipped a 2nd gen double cab about 3 years ago to Maui, the shipping company mandated the vehicle be in exact stock configuration(basically how its picked up from dealer) due to weight and dimensions for shipping. When i dropped the truck off at the port in San Diego, the “inspector” had me remove water bottles from the truck(they’re that strict). I’m sure you could opt to pay more to include the rack and RTT, but it likely will create more of a headache(paperwork) than it is worth. They utilize factory specs when figuring “weight and balance” of each embarked vehicle for the ship.
