Hi, this is my first post so please forgive me if I’m in the wrong thread or anything. I’m also not to experienced with machanics since I’m only 17. But I have done simple things like changed the cv axles. But anyways I have a 2006 4x2 6cyl Tacoma with 182,000 miles on it. I just purchased it about 4 months ago and now noticed a problem when coming to a stop or turning. If I come to a sudden stop sometimes it almost feels like the brakes are locked up and when I press the gas instead of just going it revs up and after about a second or two it clicks into gear, does a mini burnout, and jerks forward fast. It also does this when doing turns and having to press the breaks for a second and then pressing the gas after the turn it jerks hard before driving normally. It also got stuck in I’m guessing either 5th or 6th gear a couple times when stopping hard and wouldn’t downshift, the tachometer would just go down to 1000rpm and when I pressed the gas it would go about to about 3,500 rpm and then start moving and when I let go of the gas it just goes back down to 1000rpm and stays stuck in whatever gear it’s in until I pull over and turn the truck off and then it goes back to normal. I have no clue if this is just the downshift solenoids or the torque converter or the whole transmission itself. Any help or insight it appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi Riley .

This is only the starting point .

    - Your trucks transmission is completely computer controlled .
In order to diagnose the transmission properly , it needs to be put on a computer scanner and check the transmissions computer for codes .
If I took a guess , you are going to see code 2714 and code 2716 but there could be more . These two codes are related to a faulty SLT solenoid .
When these codes pop up as you are driving the truck , the transmissions computer puts the transmission into garage mode to prevent any further damage to the transmission .
This is why the transmission shifts hard

With this being said , I beleive Autozone scans for free if you dont have a scanner handy .
A lot of guys who own Tacomas run the scanguage as it does a lot for the money you are spending

    https://www.scangauge.com/products/scangauge-ii/

After you get the transmission scanned , post up the codes you found when you scanned the truck .

Do not jump ahead by ordering any parts until you post up those codes . There may be more codes and you may also be low on transmission fluid

Next step , read this , a very common problem with the 5 speed auto
    http://bluegrasstoday.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/a750e_shudder.pdf

Once you are finished reading the above link , read this one

Thats going to keep you busy for a day .

I scanned looking for codes, but there are none. However, my 2009 Tacoma still occasionally downshifts very roughly coming to a stop. It feels like I am getting hit in the rear. It started doing this after I completely changed the fluid, with new Toyota AT WS. So I am fairly certain that the SLT solenoid is the culprit. So, where do I get a replacement? This is something I can definitely do myself.

Have you recently changed the oil and pulled a HALP?

I would be incline to believe your ATF fluid level is not properly set.

Oil level has been verified twice. I used my scanner to get the correct temperature. The oil is at the correct level. I went through about 7 pages of the thread you sent me, but it is ridiculous.
What is the meaning of HALP?
The original question was “Where do I get a replacement SLT solenoid? Does anyone have a suggestion for a reliable source?

He asked where he could source a replacement solenoid. No mention of service requirement - maybe DIY - maybe not. Perhaps you can assist the man.

IME...not all dealers are crooked. Doesn't hurt to go down and ask them to price the part.

I ordered an SLT solenoid from Amazon. Today, I will go down to the dealership to get a transmission gasket and a new strainer, and transmission fluid. I should receive the solenoid later this week and probably install it early next week.
I figured out that HALP was a misspelled HELP, but I don’t believe it is true. First, draining the transmission instead of the oil pan, then putting it back in the radiator? Puhleeze!

According to my Haynes manual, the transmission fluid level should be checked with the fluid between 97F and 115F, with the engine idling. GEARCRUNCHER, do you check the 750F transmission fluid level with the engine idling?

My 07 was doing the same thing. Did a drain a fill. Tranny was a couple quarts low. Got the proper level in and it’s like a new tranny now.

I'm not Gear Cruncher, but following his advice, set the fluid level while truck is idling when transmission pan has achieved 97 to 115F.

    I had a similar issue but not quite as apparent as yours;
When coming to a hard stop, the transmission would drop out of gear and slam back into gear once stopped, resulting in a hard jerk forward as if I were rear ended.
I had a transmission cooler line rot out which leaked a lot of fluid. Once I replaced it and topped off the fluid this problem went away. So with your '09 and as Lester Lugnut suggested, you should check your AT fluid level. As for your '06. I think you may have a bigger issue than your SLT solenoid.

Why did you order a transmission shift solenoid? Also, all my years as a Toyota Master dealer tech, we never replaced the strainers - just cleaned. Toyota doesn't recommend replacing, but if you are going to, don't use some FRAM bullshit - ues OE. There are times you have to leave things to the pro's - this seems like one of those.

    Paul dot com,
I would not use Fram on a bet or a dare. I put OEM parts in my Tacoma, and I just picked up a strainer from the dealer. I know dealers only clean the strainer, but I don’t have a parts cleaning apparatus, so I could never be sure that I really got the strainer clean, really clean, so replacing it seems to me to be the only way to be sure it is clean. Besides, from what I read, this solenoid does a lot more work than the other solenoids in the transmission, and the symptoms certainly point to it as a likely culprit.
