Hey guys first post. I apologize if there is already a thread in place for my issue, I promise I looked.

Here is what's going on, I went to change the oil this morning, drained everything fine but the filter is not correct. Ordered the Toyota licensed filter on Amazon, the box was correct but the filter inside was not. My truck is currently halfway in my garage.

How do I shift in to neutral without turning the truck on?

This should be in the manual... push the start button twice without your foot on brake pedal. This turns the trucks electronic systems on but doesn't start the engine. Then shift to neutral.

RangerComa, I tried that, the shifter would not get out of park.

Did you put your foot on the brake when shifting?

Push the button twice without your foot on the brake, then apply the brake and shift into neutral.

I tried the double click without my foot on the brake, then I applied the brake to shift, it will not. I do not want to try double clicking the start with my foot on the brake just in case the engine starts without any oil.

If you are on a incline, parking pin may have weight of truck against it. Try having someone else rock/push truck a bit.

I'd either uber to the auto parts store and pick up one of their filters, or just put fresh oil in and leave the dirty filter for a day or two while you get a new toyota one. Won't be the end of the world.

Deffinately on incline, that may be it. I'll have to wait for the old lady to get back from work.

Should be a manual over ride somewhere near the shifter/boot. Might be covered by the boot, a pinhole sized opening, or a cover.

Should have an emergency release pin hidden under a plastic cover somewhere. 2nd gens are directly above the 'P' to the left of the shift lever.
Google image search seems to show 3rd gens on the front side of the console, in the dead center above where the lever would be in 'P'. Use a small flat blade or something non-marring to pop the cover out, and you should see a button. Foot on the brake, push that button, shift. This is a manual override, key/ignition should not matter

SR-71A I tried that this morning with a flat head screw driver, did not come out and I did not want to scratch it all up so I quit before I
    I did any damage.

2016 3rg had a shift lock on the shifter, like the 2ng. Not sure on the 17-19 but should be the same.

I'm glad Toyota hasn't put an electronic parking brake on the Tacoma, yet.

Piece of cloth over a flat head should do the trick. Also legit explanation of where to find this @SR-71A

Thanks. Even if you put fresh oil in with a dirty filter and just drive it into the garage, that'd be easier than fucking around with the shift lockout thing near the shifter.

Push the truck yourself, just enough ahead. Put a block of wood/brick behind tire. Should be enough to shift it.
