Soooo I need to take my truck in for the 5k maintenance interval this week... for the past two months or so It has been having this flare when it shifts between 2nd and 3rd gear in the morning (maybe it's 3rd and 4th). It happens every single morning and has occasionally happened other times throughout the day. I ended up taking a video so I could get your guys opinion... (it is usually much worse than this one in the video - it typically jumps close to 5k rpm mark before it catches the next gear).

Should I bother asking the dealership to look at it? They usually say 'can't duplicate the issue' and leave me hanging anyways.

What have your service advisors told you when you brought this up?

There is no tsb that will fix the flares. other members have had transmissions replaced to only have the same problem. we all experience it and it's not worth bringing up until a new firmware version addresses it.

The tsb addresses other concerns but the flares will remain.

Scooby24 is correct that we don't (yet) have a TSB for this. Not sure if one will come out. There was hope that a revision to the TSB included a reprogram to address this, but the revision nor a fix exist.

My opinion is take it into Toyota. Leave it overnight and get yourself dropped off in the morning to recreate the problem with the tech. It may be a common occurrence for some, but it's not right or normal.

Does it have the shift delay when going from Park to Reverse or Drive, or Reverse to Drive, or any combination early in the morning when it's cold?

    The TSB mainly addresses that.

Toyota has deemed this shift flaring normal for the vehicle; others including myself have had the same problem. @bradwhitenikki is an expert in the field of transmission software design and has the same problem.

It's not a great example of the flare (most are worse), but about a second from the end of the video you can see the tach needle jump a couple hundred rpm And my speed not correlating with it while I'm accelerating at a slow pace, aka the tranny is slipping

Smitty, you give too much credit. Haha. Flynnr, you have a valve body problem. It seems the 2016 and 2017 6 speed automatics are plagued with this. File a complaint with Toyota customer service and follow their instructions. Here's a hint. Make sure, when you leave your car overnight with the dealer, that when you take the tech for the test drive, that your are driving a dead cold car (park the truck near an exit). Make sure that your first acceleration can get to 4th gear without letting off. Use 50% throttle. This should help you in demonstrating the flaw without wasting too much time.

Brad, your post is a bit confusing to me. Are you saying that Fynnr is experiencing what everyone is calling the shift flare or are you saying that the "valve body problem" is something completely separate? I ask because mine does exactly what his video depicts.

Flynnr is experiencing shift flare. It is caused by an engineering defect in the valve body. The defect affects 2016 and 2017 automatics. The reduced component 6 speed autos have issues.

I would like to hear some input on the question from Bailey as well. My 2017 is 3 weeks old, has 600 miles and for sure has the flare issue. I don't care to waste my time going to dealership if nothing is or can be done. But if there is a solution, I am all for it. But my time is valuable as well.

This is more of a rhetorical question but why go through the trouble if there is no fix and they simply will tell you it is satisfactory behavior of the vehicle???

1000 miles on my 2017 TRD Pro and started experiencing the 3-4 shift flare recently. Will address it during 5K checkup, when there will hopefully be a new TSB out that can remedy the issue.

To get in the system and add to the numbers of unresolved issues; causing big T to see risk enough to come up with a solution.
