    New to TacomaWorld,

Just got a new 13' Doublecab TRD Off Road 4x4.

Snowed at my college today and i took the Taco out in the snow to test out the 4x4 for the first time. While making sharp turns and parking i notice that it feels like the front wheels grab and the whole truck stops. Then once you hit the gas, the back wheels spin for a split second then it goes back to normal. Im not sure if there is something wrong, or if its the weight of the truck shifting forward.

If anyone knows anything about this feel free to share!

If your using 4x4 on pavement that's slightly covered in snow while turning, the front end may bind up if there is enough traction. 4x4 is only to be used when the ground is able to be pushed away from the tires (loose dirt, gravel, snow ect.)

So when the front grips the front and rear tires cant turn at different speeds thus you get the bind. Try it on really snow covered and see how she goes

    Too few to list.
Sharp turns and 4x4 does not go together. What you felt was probably your front gears binding.

I cannot tell by what you wrote what you are saying exactly, but I can tell you that you do not ever want to have the truck in 4 wheel drive on hard pavement while turning sharply. Unless there was enough snow to allow the truck to slip, not to bind in 4 wheel drive, serious damage can be done.

DO NOT TURN ON PAVEMENT WHILE IN 4X4!!!! It is horrible for the drive train and your front end could possibly bind up horribly.

If it's binding, it's too grippy for 4wd. Binding is normal on high traction surfaces.

Open up the radius of your turns in 4WD or temporily shift to 2WD if you need to cut it really sharp

sharp turns while using part-time 4WD aren't the greatest thing, even on loose traction surfaces.

We only have full time 4wd.

Having no center differential is what causes the binding.

a center diff means full-time. Tacomas have part-time, no center diff. Only to be used part of the time.

Guess it depends on how you look at it. Ours could be considered full time, as it always 100% active when you're in 4wd.

No, it depends if the truck has selectable 4wd or non-selectable full-time 4wd with a center differential. The vast majority of 4wd trucks, including all Tacomas, are part-time 4wd. It's called part-time 4wd because it can be switched back and forth from 2wd to 4wd at will. There are a random few trucks with full-time 4wd and center differentials, like manual transmission FJ Cruisers and some Jeep Grand Cherokees.

    It is an industry-wide term.

    From wikipedia:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four-wheel_drive

Jeep's Command-track was labeled a "part-time" 4WD and had no center diff and the their Selec-Trac and Quadra-Trac were "full-time" 4WD transfer cases with a center diff.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeep_four-wheel-drive_systems

Toyota uses the same terminology, part-time indicating no center diff and full-time indicating center diff.

I always thought our trucks were part time 4WD
