I am about due for my 45k service and am wondering what the cons are for not getting this service completed? I had the oil changed at 40k and tires rotated then as well. I regularly change the oil at the 10k interval. It seems the in between services are mainly a way for Toyota to charge me for a tire rotation. For those who complete their own oil changes and tire rotations, what do you due for those in between services? Also will skipping this service have any affect on what is remaining of my warranty?

Tire rotation has kinda gotten out of wack when we went to 10,000 mile recommended oil changes, since most sources recommend rotation 5000 - 7500 miles. As long as Toyota is paying for it, I take mine in at 5,000 even if all it gets is rotation. If I where paying, I'd probably change oil and rotate at 7500.

Missing the floor mat alignment check will void all Toyota liability if you total it. :)

I’d follow all the parts of the maintenance guide anyways, doing it yourself is ok.

Go to www.toyotaowners.com and create a profile. Input any service you do along with the mileage, that will be attached to your VIN should anyone have an issue come warranty time.

Rotating tires will make them last longer.

I generally buy my tires at Discount Tire, so rotation is free there. Beats having to go to the dealer.

I have mine done every 5k since I’m still under the free service from dealer. After it runs out, I’ll do what someone said above and shoot for 7,500. Should be fine

Any place you purchase tires from should rotate them for free. Get them done every 5,000 miles and your tires will last a long time (provided your alignment is within specs).

Eric Foreman on that 70's show. Loved that show!

I rotate mine every 5k. The tires on my Tacoma had about 50K on them when I traded it in and they looked like they had another 50K left in them.

I never rotated my tires on past vehicles but I think it's well worth it.

I used to rotate mine every 5000 miles too. on my Taco I do every 10K. my Nitto TG G2s have been on it for a little over 13K miles and they have been rotated once. they still seriously look brand new. the way I trade vehicles I should never have to buy tires for this truck again.

I had the dealer do my service up to 45 k miles. I’m living “dangerously” now (doing my own work), since the warranty gos to 60 k miles.

I have a dumb question, so go easy on me. :)

Why does rotating the tires more frequently make them last longer? If you were to rotate say once every 5,000 miles vs once every 10,000 miles, at 20,000 miles the tires would have been on the same axle for the same amount of miles (10,000 each). Why does this make a difference in tire longevity?

Each tire position wears differently. For example right side front might cause more wear on the outside tread while rear left might wear more evenly. Rotating evens this sort of thing out. At least that's how it was explained to me many years ago and it's pretty much accepted as a prudent practice.

That makes since, but I was thinking we were to rotate front to back and not left to right? Do I have that wrong?

Front tires go straight back, back tires cross over to the front. At least that’s how I’ve always done rotations.

Could it be perhaps the ones on the front turn left and right quite a bit unlike the ones on the rear which don't?
