I have a 2003 V6 4x4 automatic Tacoma. I was changing the oil today, and while screwing on the new oil filter and cleaning up oil around it, I noticed a sensor(?) break off.
I think it was already brittle and just got brushed and fell off, a small plastic ring part came off completely as well as a spring. The wired part is still connected..

    What is this sensor?
    How can I replace it?
Is it a big deal and need to do asap? I am planning to drive from Reno to Phoenix in a couple days so it's kinda a bad time...

I couldn't find a part number. From diagrams I think it could be a coolant sensor, oil pressure sending unit, or oxygen sensor. Really not sure.. I'm not good with the sensors and all that.
The place where it pops into looked like it threaded in, so I tried to unscrew it and it was larger than a 19mm and also already rounded out so I stopped trying..20190311_170746.jpg 20190311_170822.jpg 20190311_170839.jpg 20190311_170936.jpg 20190311_170819.jpg
Also maybe unrelated but in the past year maybe like 3 or 4 times the check engine light sometimes comes on and throws a code for Catalytic Converter/Oxygen Sensor but it often just goes away on its own..

Well, I wouldn't recommend it. I should think the present condition would result in the red oil light illuminating near the speedometer. Have you cranked the truck?

Well, far as I know, a failed oil pressure switch should make the oil light come on. Is the light failed?

It's not leaking so you'll be fine driving. The sensor broke at the connector. Sensor base is still intact sealing the hole. On our trucks the only thing the sensor does is make the warning light on the cluster illuminate when there's low oil pressure.

Do I need to drain the oil first to change the sensor out?
    Should I use thread tape?

Os it as easy as using a deep socket to remove the sensor and replacing it, clicking housing/connection together of the M and F parts?

And no there is no oil light on.

No need for teflon tape, I don't like teflon tape for oil or fuel. A bit of rtv (sensor safe, most are these days) is sufficient. No need to drain oil first..

Did you look at the attachment I saved above? It has the installation instructions. But, to answer your question about thread tape, here is the recommendation:

    8. REINSTALL OIL PRESSURE SWITCH (a) Apply adhesive to 2 or 3 threads. Adhesive: Part No. 08833–00080, THREE BOND 1344, LOCTITE 242 or equivalent. Loctite is the most readily available. Check Autozone, O'Reilleys,...

I never have or thought to use threadlock for a sensor like this. Make sense cause it's a tapered thread & technically self sealing so a bit of threadlock will be sufficient to aid in sealing.

I prefer & would use Loctite 243 rather than 242. 243 is the same as 242 blue threadlock except 243 is better in applications where there is still oil residue. But they don't sell 243 at auto parts or hardware stores.

Yes I did read the attachment. It was rather vague. "Remove sensor" or "install sensor". So I didnt know if they were leaving some details out. Also what is a SST? Specialized service tool? The part number also didn't match the OEM so I didn't know if it was exactly for a 4x4 automatic V6 1st gen 2003 Tacoma...

I've been doing research and read conflicting information about whether you should use thread lock or thread tape or sensor safe loctite etc or not at all since its just oil...

SST is a "Special Service Tool". Translation: overpriced tool only available from a Toyota dealership. Most people find ways around them, or it may be something you can buy from AutoZ or O'Reilley's if a common tool won't do the job.

BTW that info is from the Toyota Field Service Manual (FSM). The info was from the 3.4L section of the manual. Probably the part number has changed due to some small design change since the manual was issued. Happens a lot. Or, your vehicle has an original part and the one in the manual was updated. Either way, from Toyota Dealer:

    Toyota Genuine Factory Part
    Part Number: 835300E010

    OIL PRESSURE SENDING UNIT Tacoma

    $51.00
    Fits 2003 Toyota Tacoma Base
