I have a friend who has a new generation Jeep that's getting a ticking sound. My friend is pissed because Jeep won't honor his warranty because he doesn't have all his service receipts. While that sucks, I do understand where Jeep is coming from, they don't want to repair a vehicle that may not have been properly maintained.

That got me thinking, does Toyota honor warranties if you do self maintenance? I know you can enter a self service record for your service history. Is that enough? I recently did my 30k service myself. Based on the amount of people that do service themselves here I'm thinking it's not really an issue?

    From: https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0138-auto-warranties-routine-maintenance

"That said, there may be certain situations where a repair may not be covered. For example, if you or your mechanic replaced a belt improperly and your engine is damaged as a result, your manufacturer or dealer may deny responsibility for fixing the engine under the warranty. However, according to the FTC, the manufacturer or dealer must be able to demonstrate that it was the improper belt replacement — rather than some other defect — that caused the damage to your engine. The warranty would still be in effect for other parts of your car."

The burden of proof lies with Jeep, not your friend.
The tick has to be due to his inability to maintain the vehicle.

Dealers and car manufacturers try to get away with this shit all the time.

Warranties ARE NOT VOIDED by modifications or self service.

Look up Mangunson-Moss Warranty Act. Its a federal law.

Thanks guys! This is awesome information I'll pass to my friend. So, as long as the car is properly maintained, whether through dealer, 3rd party, or self, warranty should still be honored because burden of proof lies with dealer/manufacturer.

Just curious, has anyone here had an issue with Toyota not honoring warranties because they claimed self repair voids warranties? Given the vast amounts of people that here that do their own oil service, it seems like Toyota is pretty good about it. But maybe I'm wrong.

    Yes.

Like I said dealers and manufacturers try to get away with what they can.
Mostly its the dealers since they provide the service and rely on the manufacturer for reimbursement.

went to the link and started the sign up process until toyota does not recognize any dealer in the state of hawaii. entered zip for the dealer on maui and the dealer on oahu, no luck. all Toyota's are imported thru Servco maybe that has something to do with it. it let me create a account but when i pull up service record nothing shows. for now i have receipts.
again those of us in Hawaii screwed again.
