Was out wheeling this past Saturday at Hidden Falls and broke a CV. I've never seen one break like this before. Sheared the shaft where it goes in to the inner boot. Post some pics of your busted CV axles.

That is very surprising. I would think the shear strength on that CV is really high. What was happening when it sheared off?

I wonder if that is a weld where they connect the joint to the shaft.

    Wow, that's gnarly!

Heavy on the skinny pedal spinning the fronts like crazy? Or was it an impact of some sort?

The clean break without a twist makes me wonder as well - although if it was welded (well) the metal around the weld will break before the actual weld itself. Must be some cheap Chinese pot metal!

I've never seen a Toyota CV break like that. I agree that it must have been manufactured poorly.

    Here's my last break

Going up a steep incline and wasn't making it, so double locked and hit the throttle. Front came off the ground about 3ft and must have broken the shaft when it caught traction.

No weld. It was a little thinner in that spot for the boot seal recess.

    Napa axle. Probably rebranded cardone.

Hmm, I was thinking a friction weld would be a very good way to manufacture these things en masse, and that would be a logical place to join the pieces together.

I was able to weld that rod from my scrap bin to the broken axle shaft in the truck but I couldn't pull the stub out. The twisted splines were holding on pretty well. I had to pull the axle tube out and work it with a BFH to get it to break free. I might have been able to pull it out without having to take the axle tube out if I had a slide hammer but I was gumpin it

That failure doesn't look like a typical shaft failure. It looks more like a failed joint in shear. Even the fracture is a very clean break.

Shaft failures exhibit a torsional type failure with a spiral crack or fracture area. Like the pictures from @Wulf

OP, you say these are NAPA parts. How long ago did you purchase? Any warranty on these parts?
If this were me, I'd take the parts to NAPA to hear their take on the failure. As a precaution, I'd also be looking at the other side. Plus consider another source for replacements.

Lifetime warranty. Guy didn't seem to care too much beside getting me a new one, which that's all I wanted. I've got another Napa on the other side. I have an oem I rebuilt in place of the broken axle now. I've also had CVJ axles which I exploded one.
