Hey! I take a lot of long road trips in my taco, and wish the driver seat was more comfortable. Has anyone done a seat swap? Have recommendations on how to do it/what vehicle to take seats from? Is it dangerous because you’re messing with the original airbag setup? Is it worth it?
Thanks for any and all insight!

Many people have done it, the safety aspect is questionable however because you would be removing/modifying the seat airbags as well as the passenger presence system.
    Have you considered spacers?
I put front seat jackers in mine and it made a big difference in comfort for me anyway (I'm 6'2)

FR-S seats are awesome. I have owned a couple 86's, along with swapping a set of the seats into a 1st gen Taco. Highly recommend for comfort and support.

Swapping seats in 1st gens is different as there's no airbag system components in the seats on 1st gen trucks so you can pretty much put in any seat you want that will fit.

2nd gens 09 and later (and some pre 09's) have side airbags in the seats, position sensors in the seat tracks, and the passenger seat has a weight sensing & ocupant classification system in it.
It's your truck, do what you want with it just be aware of the potential negative impacts of occupant safety.

Watching this thread as my 07 drivers side seat is starting to get crushed on the door side due to my weight and how I get into the truck. I'll need a new seat soon.

I speak from experience on the matter because I swapped in some bucket seats and fiddled with my airbag sensors, and if I were to do it over again, I would have have my seat foam rebuilt and seats done in leather instead of doing the swap. It would have cost a similar amount, the quality would be nicer and it would be nice peace of mind knowing my airbag system will work as intended. It's not a huge deal considering my truck gets trailered most places now, but if it wasn't, I would probably swap back to oem seats.

I woudl do that, as i have a good seat upholstery place near by. But I can't afford to be without a seat in my truck (to drive) as it is my one and only vehicle. So replacements would be quicker. and I have an 07, which I believe don't have airbags?

Ah, that's a good point. They don't have airbags but they do have airbag sensors. The drivers seat has a position sensor which tells the computer how close the seat is to the steering wheel. The passenger side has an occupancy sensor, which is a whole clusterfuck of sensors in there to see if someone is sitting there or not.

This was from the passenger seat on my 2005. I hose clamped them to simulate someone sitting there and then secured them under my passenger seat.

That makes sense. I knew about the ones on the passenger side. My range teaching bag is heavy enough throw the passenger seat belt warning light.

I Didnt' realize there were ones on the driver's side too. I'll have to take that into consideration when doing a swap or just buying a compatible relpacement. Maybe one from a junk yard.

There aren't any weight sensors on the drivers side, just the one positional one and mine's just zip tied up under there. While my SRS light isn't illuminated on the dash, I don't have total confidence it would work as intended if I were to get into an accident. Like I said though, a moot point considering I barely drive it on the road. Just something to consider whenever you do this.

I swapped in Audi S5 seats. you can setup the pressure sensors as @EatSleepTacos noted the airbags inside I have not seen anyone tackle. It may be possible. It haven’t gone down that road yet.
