Have anyone ever replace the seat belts in their Tacoma? If so, do you have a good source besides the dealer for purchasing new ones?

This is my next project too. Both, driver and passenger site seat belts don't retract easy anymore (I have to push them). On the top of that the driver side doesn't always "click" - I have to wiggle it at bit to get it lock. Looking for a good place to buy the whole set of seat belts to 95 4x4 Tacoma Ext Cab with split bench front seat. There is a seat belt in the middle but it is as good as new as it was never used. I'll be in States next month so this is good time to do shopping.

Did it change how stiff/hard it is to pull and retract the belt? The seatbelts on Tacomas are crazy stiff compared to say a sedan.

My old seat belts were dirty and didn't even retract without help each time.
Now they work like new retract fully all by themselves and look beautiful,
The dealer said there were only 4 left in blue for my truck available across the USA,so I said let me take two

Yeah, you can't get them in certain colors anymore from the dealer. I replaced the drivers latch side but had to go with gray instead of tan.

As far as not retracting, people have disassembled and cleaned them. You have to be careful with not letting the spring unwind. Find some forum threads and/or videos of how to do it before attempting it. I'm sure other Toyota models from this era had similar mechanisms, so the info should still be good.

Yup, I tried to do this and soaked the belts in soap and water, it did help but still did not have the full Retracting power like a new belt setup and 6 months later was all lazy again. There is a place that rebuilds them on the internet, I talked to them and they said to send the belts in and they would see what they could do, but no guarantees, so I just went New OEM, figured might be better with new just in case I got in an accident as my belts were 20 years old with 500,000 miles on them , better to have something working perfect when it comes to my life.

My drivers side won't usually go in without a little help either. I heard you can take it apart and just put another turn of preload on the spring though. Haven't quite got around to it yet.

My rear driver's side extended cab seat belt just plain does not retract anymore. There's no more spring action in it, the whole length of the belt is fully extended. Can I fix this or do I need a new belt?

It's worth a shot I'd say. You really aren't out anything other than a little time if it doesn't work.

Thanks for the info. Looks like they have mine for $145.20, that beats camelbacktoyota, which I used before. My local dealer in Elk Grove, CA will not budge from MRSP so I'm "forced" to shop elsewhere.

I haven’t looked at it too closely but wasn’t sure how to do it. Did you have to remove the seat to access the bolt?

In split bench there are three seat belts (including the center one). I have replaced driver and passenger sites, as the center is never used. Passenger site is very easy. Take out the cover and it is just one nut accessible without removing the seat (just push the driver seat all the way forward and pass site rearward)

    upload_2021-2-22_3-2-37.jpg

But if you do the driver site at the same time, it is easier to remove the driver seat anyway. The driver site is major PITA. It looks like the seat was built around that buckle. Two major things were problem there: accessing the bolt/nut that is hidden between the seat framing and threading the wire with the bulky plug inside that framing maze. I did not take the pictures of my struggle, but for sure the seat must come out of the truck and then must be partially disassembled on the bench. In my build thread there is a description of my struggle: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...k-or-rysium-build.457350/page-4#post-15406401

Good luck, you will need it :D

just replaced driver side seat belt receiver on my 1996 tacoma. there is barely, just barely, enough space to back out the bolt holding the driver and middle seatbelt receivers. the plastic cover has a small screw on the bottom that can be access if take the seat out. taking out this screw gives you just a little bit more play in that plastic cover. the wires to the existing receiver pass between the seat and the rail and there is not enough space to pass the connector. i just dropped the wire down the hole- there is enough space. To get the old receiver wire out i just cut off the connector and pulled it through. I did not disassemble the seat.

Does anyone sell just the belt to install in your own retractor? Someone mentioned a seller on EBay in another thread but it appears they only do rebuilds on units sent to them.

When belt is frayed most likely all internal guts including belt stopper are worn out too. I saw that when comparing brand new belt with guts of 23 years old belt. It's not worth to rebuild or refurbish 20+ years old seat belts imho.
