My drivers side front seat belt material is a little thrashed. I found a local front seat belt assembly out of a 1996-2002 4runner -- is this a direct replacement?

Would help to know what vehicle you have...

I would suggest doing a part number lookup for the 2 vehicles in something like Rockauto.com.

See if the part numbers match. If they do, it's a direct replacement, if they don't, well, then they still might actually fit, but it's less certain.

I know for a fact that 1998 and 2004 are incompatible.

    I have a 1999 tacoma xtracab 4x4. The replacement part is from a 96-02 4runner. Seller doesn't specify year/style.

Not trying to sound like an ass, sorry if I do though, but when it comes to seatbelts and safety, spend the money on the right parts.

to each their own but I wouldn't even wear one if they didn't make me. I'm not saying it's smart, I know it's not.
And I'm exaggerating, if I were driving a '68 charger and about to chase a '68 Mustang through San Fran., I'd buckle up.

If they're close they may fit for a pinch. Could throw codes though if not recognized by air bag system.

You understand that many parts between Tacomas & 4Runners are identical, right? If the seat belt assembly is the same then I am spending the money on the right parts. Thanks for your sage advice.

Thank you for that, it's very helpful. I'll keep researching myself as well.

Even some 1st gen seatbelts aren't intercompatible. A 5-lug extended cab '96 driver's seatbelt wouldn't fit in a 6-lug '99 extended cab driver's side even though the cabs are identical, for example.

Older seat belts don't have pre-tensioner (pyrotechnic device fired by airbag computer) so they are not connected to the airbag computer. Newer (I can't tell the cut-off year) have a yellow plug connected with the airbag computer. I don't know if there are differences between years of seat belts with pre-tensioner but all matters. So the part number lookup is the best bet. Otherwise is just pure gamble.

Really dosn't matter if it is a Tacoma or Formula 1 car, the speed at the moment of crash matters. If you drive your Tacoma at 20mph there is not much difference of wearing seat belts or not. But at 50mph it is a choice of death or serious injuries and walking away with scratches. Just my 2 cents. As for me, I can't even park my car not wearing seat belts. And I laugh at these morons not fastening their seat belts in the plane imagining them flying around at turbulence.

Yeah I gotta yell at my friends who ride in my truck to put on their seatbelts. It's annoying some people just don't care.

Thanks for all the replies, guys. Looks like I'll need to narrow my search to the exact part number.
