    Hello all,

I am installing roof tracks to my leer 100xr. All the instructional videos show sealing with silicone, but I’ve read butyl is better.

If I just run a length of butyl tape down the rack, punch the bolts through the butyl, then install, would that be sufficient for water sealing?

I cannot find any YouTube videos of butyl being used for roof racks.

    Thanks!

I would (and have) punch the holes first, apply the butyl to the racks, "x" the butyl in the bolt holes with a razor, and then install. A wire brush and a tiny bit of mineral spirits will take care of any butyl that ends up on the threads inside the shell that might gum up your nuts.

Low heat on the butyl before installing can help make sure you're getting good contact on contoured or uneven surfaces, but too much heat will make it run.

    It’s that simple huh?

Well, sounds like I can full send the install this weekend!
