could I turn my sealed dual 10 inch subwoofer box behind my seat into a ported box ? I think a port would be better cause my box now tends to disort at higher volume and doesn't sound good

You could try it but normally the port size and box are matched together. But hey, if it doesn't work you can build your own if you have the time and skills.

All you would have to do is create a hole in your current the box with a hole saw, that would be the easiest way to do it. Most sealed boxes have some sort of stuffing inside, take that out and you'll be good to go. I prefer sealed for the nice tight solid bass, but the downside is sealed boxed require more Oomphh from a sub to get comparable sound from a ported.

At lower volumes like around 12 it sounds great but as I get higher maybe around 20 you start to hear disortion and the bass goes away to hardly any at all and just sounds terrible

Funny story, when I was in high school my buddy wrecked his accord after he had just put in 2 Swapmeet subs and a 2000W swap meet amp, so we took it out and put it into my other buddies mini van and holy shit it hit twice as hard. The whole van was a rolling bandpass box, we would go around setting off car alarms. one of the very few times i've seen a cheap system perform. I think the amp was a lanzar or something like that, the subs were royal red.

I've always heard that it's the box that makes better sound

Reason that happens is its a huge difference in sound from a car trunk to opening it up and putting it in a minivan or hatchback. Ever want a good sound that hits really hard get a hatch back, mini van or Suv they all hit twice as hard fucking crazy weird but I wish I still had my explorer and had this truck

It is the box but that box is made as a sealed box unless you really know what your doing then go for it if not I'd upgrade your components

You could, but it would be a mistake. If you want a ported enclosure, you need one that's the right size. The one you have is probably far too small. You should be able to get enclosure volume numbers & tuning frequencies from the sub manufacturer to confirm this. Err, since we're going there, what's the current enclosure volume? Exact sub model? Have you confirmed no enclosure leaks?

Still a cheap sub. These are capable of reproducing lower frequencies, but aren't the best at it. Keep in mind here that speaker drivers are probably the most critical components in any install. A quality sub will make a big difference.

We all know you aren't feeding this single 10 a kilowatt & a half. Do you know RMS power? or at least the model number? Unless this is an old Zed-made amp, it may be part of your problem. I suspect wiring a bit too. Can you tell us about that. About the ground location? Who did this install?

Maybe. Each driver has enclosure requirements, and if you're outside that alignment, it will make a difference. That's to say the driver will sound as good as it can in the right enclosure.

You could do this, but see the previous comment. Each driver needs a specific volume range and if it's not there, it will certainly sound worse than it can.

Don't do this. A ported enclosure has an internal volume and a port volume. These need to match whatever driver you use and should be designed/selected after the driver is chosen. Simply modifying the enclosure on hand will ensure that both are too small and the box will become a one-note wonder...while destroying the box. It is true that a sealed driver will need more power than a ported alignment to achieve the same SPL - all things held equal.

Oh, and that stuffing inside is usually polyester fiber or poly-fil. Its purpose is to sort of slow the movement of air inside the box ( or if you wish, to change the apparent speed of sound). In practical terms, it means the woofer thinks it's in a larger enclosure than it really is when fill is added (to a point). So if the box you have now is too small, this can be used to make it appear bigger to the speaker.

You can see by this chart that it makes quite a difference in apparent volume and seems to peak around 1.75 lb/cubic feet.

It sounds like you're driving this thing into a wildly distorted mess. You're asking too much from your current equipment. As mentioned before, you might be able to help it some. Can you tell use where all your settings are? Bass from head unit? Are you using bass boost at the amp or anywhere else? If you answered yes, TURN IT OFF! Where are your crossovers set and which ones are on? How did you set your sub amp gain? What's your source? (phone through head unit, etc?) All your wiring appropriate and secure?

I'm going to say it again that you are probably asking too much of your equipment, but even that cheaper stuff, installed properly, can do a decent job. An improper install and/or tune can give you what you're experiencing though. It can probably get better just by flipping some stuff around, but I suspect you want more bass than this setup is able to provide. Might be time to rethink the whole bag here. Assuming this is in a Taco, you don't have much room to work with so you may be stuck with a single sealed 10 or 12. But it can easily be enough. I'm using a single 10 sealed with about 600 worms on it in a .5 cube enclosure and it makes an awful lot of loud for the space it consumes...more than I need. I have to get pretty stupid with it to get into audible distortion.
