Scuba tank mount?

    I have an Amerex 809 fire extinguisher bracket that I am going to mount horizontally above the right wheel well. It's a 10lb fire extinguisher bracket that fits my 5lb CO2 tank perfectly. I don't know how heavy a scuba tank is and if you want to be mounting it off the plastic bedside. If you have big enough backing plates on the back side, I would think it would be alright, but that's up to you. I know Amerex makes bigger heavy duty brackets. See if there's 1 that will work. They are really well made and are slightly adjustable.

    I noticed the boat I went scuba diving on had 10" PVC pipe cut and bolted to the boat.

    You just dropped your whole kit in there on the way out and the way back.

    I don't know how difficult it would be for you to find 10" PVC and if you did you'd have to buy 10' of the stuff. Might not be worth your time. :notsure:

    I smell a group buy in the making...

    OP, you just need 4 more people to spring for the 10' section of PVC. Cut it into 2' pieces and y'all are good to go.

    Or maybe build a cradle out of 2x4's and some plywood, something that you can ratchet down between the d rings. Maybe even secure a strap on the cradle with a postmans slide on it. Have some 45 degree angles cut out of the 2x4 so it's sits between the wedges etc. The cradle wouldn't have to be much bigger than the tank, which would make it easy enough to take in and out and store when you're not using it. Just an idea anyway.

    C50 tanks. Screwed a cylinder plastic base cup to the truck and cut a few vertical slits to allow the cylinder to drop in and be taken out. I use a rubber bungee cord to hold down.

    Hmm. If I were to find a way to hook a 4" section to the cleat rail, I could drop the tank in there. I like it.

    Using tank boots. I like it! Might combine that with the PVC pipe suggestion from earlier. I don't just want to use bungee cords between two cleats. Not stable enough for me.

    This is what I came up with so far. I'm not entirely sure it's as stable as I expected it to be.
    I'm not driving around with tanks every day. It might be 'good enough'. Depends on how much the empty flopping quick fists will bother me.

    The way we did it when I worked for a scuba shop was 2 or 3" pvc pipe attached together with rope, and the tanks rested in between the pipe. Once the base layer of tanks was down we'd stack them on pyramid style and throw a ratchet strap on stop to keep them secure. And I'd stack the gear behind the tanks in my bed to keep them from sliding foward. And that worked for everything from aluminum 80's to steel 100"s, even took a stack of 140's one day.

    Yep, I've seen that setup before as well. If I decide to go back to laying them flat, I'll make something like that. I thought having them upright would somehow be more beneficial. Not sure about that now. Before this I had them tied down and hooked to a cleat (using the rope you can still see in the picture). I'm still considering whether or not to keep this setup I have right now.

    The only thing I didn't like about upright bottles is the potential for one of them to fall over and break the valve, or spin the handle enough to drain the tank.

    Minor mod to the mod. I moved the straps to the cab. Much cleaner that way. I did not have to take the rail off. I wondered if I had to, but I was able to slide the completed bracket into the rail with little (but enough) clearance to get it done.

    That looks good. If you moved them to the drivers side, it would be less of an issue with blocking your vision on a lane change.

    Dangit, didn't think about that. I haven't driven with it yet. My main reason for not doing it was weight distribution. Good point though. I'll take it for a spin in a while to see how much I shot myself in the foot with this setup.
