About a month ago I bought my truck - it's a (barely) used '21 TRD Sport DC, found it at a larger area Ford dealer. When all the paperwork was done, my wife & I were ready to leave with our new purchase, the sales guy handed me my 'key' and said "oh there's only one key, we'll try to work something out". I was like WTF, but didn't want to ruin my joy leaving with a new-to-me truck by making a big stink about it.

I've tried contacting the sales guy a few times about the key, but he's apparently either blowing me off or no longer working there. I should just call the sales manager and demand a second key. Who doesn't provide two keys with a $40K vehicle?

Just for reference, how muich are the keys if I just tried to procure one outright? I am guessing they are way more expensive than I imagine.

They aren't cheap, I would be phoning the manager for sure.

Typically with used vehicles even off makes they need to supply 2 keys.

I program keys for other dealers often.

I think they are almost 400$ now.

The last I'd heard, they were only providing one key because of the chip shortage - and were supposed to provide the second at some point in the future.

On another thread they were saying that because of the chip shortage, manufactures were only providing 1 key.

There is a way to register with Toyota to receive the second key.

Oh, so maybe the previous owner actually only had one key, since it's a '21? If so, yeah I'll def try to work that out with Toyota instead of banging my head against the wall with a Ford dealer

I got an OEM one (Fob) a few years ago for maybe $120-130? Had it programmed for $90 at the dealer.

Didn’t need it, I wanted to have a 3rd fob.

makes sense with the chip shortage they would be a lot more now if even available…

place I got it from ~ if I remember was car and truck remotes.com? Something like that. this was 2018-2019

    Yeah
Toyota (or techstream if you have other access) would be able to tell you how many keys are programmed.

When I was doing my shopping and looked at the online sites - I noticed that many used low mileage vehicles only had one key being offered. I kinda assumed that maybe these are repossessed vehicles and the owners have the keys. Good luck with the Ford dealer.

    Go here: https://www.toyota.com/recall

    Enter your VIN...

There should be some verbiage about the 'second' key that is due to these trucks. I checked mine a few weeks ago and
sure enough it advised that the 'second' key was now available for me to fetch at any local dealer. Took the print out to
another closer dealer and they produced it for me.

When I bought it I was advised of the key issue and there was a blurb about it in the dash.

I lost one of my fobs. Ordered a used or refurbished OEM off eBay or someplace and had a local locksmith program it. This is probably your least expensive option.

Well, when I put my VIN in there I got "There are no open Safety Recalls or Service Campaigns for this vehicle." Good in general, but nothing about a second key.

Not a repo vehicle, clean CarFax, the previous owner traded it in on an F150.

Chip Shortage causing all the kerfuffle ... check in with a local Toyota dealer tell them your story I bet they
can ( eventually ) get you setup with the second key. I had my 2021 for about 6 months before I was able to get the second one.

Okay I got my 21 SR5 in March it came with 2 keys 1 H key 1 plane key H keys opens the electric lock but still has a key and the dealership said that was all that it came with. At that time many were going through this issue some were getting a notice from the dealership that another would be provided when available others were not, like myself. I was pissed. Anyway fast forward to 3 weeks ago. I was driving home from work and I get an alert on my radio to go to the dealership to get my 2nd H key that is now available. This came from Toyota. The dealership knew nothing about it. When I went to the parts counter they were clueless. The parts guy takes me to the service writer, he's clueless, they look up the notice and find that yes I'm entitled to a key I'm starting to get excited for about 3 seconds they are looking at the screen and it tells them it's under a different part number than stock ones and since this dealership had no clue to order them, this allotment is out and backordered again so I'm still waiting. Contact a Toyota dealership and see if you can get on the list. Let's hope you don't get bent over since you are the second owner. Besides it doesn't matter how many keys everyone else got when buying their trucks there was about 4- month period the Chip shortage hit a lot of people with both fob's and H keys It's all in the manufacture date and vin number. Good luck OP. There are at least 3 threads on this topic from the past I don't know how to add them one has the dates affected. Those shorted got 1 fob or H key and 1 straight key for the glove box and box/tail gate. Depending on the trim level. One's that got fobs get 2 fobs and a straight key for the glove box and tailgate. H key level only get 2 because it has a key attached.

If you have to go the route of buying a key you might try this company Tom's Key.
I wanted some extra keys and was able to get a plain H chip key with no remote and an H key with remote for my 2020 SR5.
The programer was pretty easy to use and I just went to the local hardware store that cuts keys and had the key cut.
