Hi, new here first Tacoma or any truck for that matter. I won't be doing dedicated off roading but I drive off roads to get to where I'm going to do things that I want to do. So I was wondering, how steep of an angle can you safely drive a stock suspension and tire truck sideways? I'm referring to the "roll" angle the dashboard tells you. I tried to search but I don't see anything or my search skills suck.

If I remember correctly, the Rsca is triggered at 30 degrees.

There are other variables such as rate of angle change. It won't always go off on a roll over. Usually at 30 degrees people are freaking out and tires are letting the truck slide into the gully.

I had to look up what RCSA was. I can't find that button for some reason. Do I not have one for a 16?

So if people are usually slipping at 30 I guess I'll stay away from 30.

Yeah, but I figure that should be seen as the point at which toyota saw fit to prep for the worst. I know I saw a link on another thread to a calculation for roll over angle, but I cant seem to find it now. I figure I would pucker around 20 degrees.

Thanks NV, according to the dash that's only about 15, it looks pretty steep already.

Looks like you have a 16 OR also, where is this RSCA button?

I went to one of the tacoma events they hosted at Bass Pro shops. They took you on a ride through a course to push the limits of what the truck is capable of. The in dash meter tops out at 30 but we went to about 32 degrees. It's way more than I think anyone would actually push the truck to.

Yeah it was pretty steep and definitely made me pucker. There was a decent sized rock off to my left that would have made a pretty good sized dent into my rocker panel if I slid into it, but thats another reason why I want sliders. I would definitely try to avoid anything thats close to 30 degrees especially if its in loose rock or dirt. No I haven't found the button yet which makes me wonder if we have one.

Has anyone figured out how to turn off the RSCA on 3rd gens?

I looked for mine too but couldn't find it. Sounds like this might have to end up being a mod. At least there is plenty of space for the button.

I’ve not gone past 20 for roll and don’t what to, that was about pucker factor 7 mainly because the direction of roll was not only on my side but the cliff also.:goingcrazy:

There's no "off" button unlike the previous generation, but 30deg. is well within 'pucker/vehicle preservation' territory, and no one has managed to trigger the airbags while off-roading.

No you can't turn it off on the 3rd gen.

The angle is proprietary but I can tell you there is literature stating it will go off due to a side incline, and if impacted on the side.

No one has reported it happening accidentally so far. It takes a lot of things into account. It will deploy seatbelt pretensioner charges and the curtains on a roll over 100% of the time.

Here's a 2nd gen that should have pushed their button.

I've seen a rollover on the highway, and I would never bypass these systems unless it was a 100% offroad vehicle.

found out in my recent cliff diving accident

On the upside, you had some cool colored rock lights to dance to while you got your truck outta there.

Hit a patch of black ice under a light dusting of snow - still had the (worn out) factory tires on there, and it no longer steered. I tried to slow it down, but breathing on the brakes just made it exponentially worse, and off the cliff we went. Funny enough, the willows stopped us smoother than the off-road’s ABS had the whole trip
Haha, unfortunately at -5*F it was a bit cold for dancing!! As soon as it stopped i dug all our winter gear and blankets out of the back seat and layered up.
Thankfully we’d slid off on a rare chunk of highway with cell service out there, otherwise we may not have been rescued at all. Not much night traffic on the way to Chitina AK in the winter - excluding the wolves, moose and rabbits of course

and to not derail it too much — when the taco is at such an angle, it starts to idle wonky - alternatively racing and stumbling — likely from ingesting oil.

My low oil level light came on as soon as i restarted it too— just from the angle. The low pressure light did not illuminate
