Well I installed my new S&B cold air intake today, I have to say the job is rather involved
for 1 person, A helper in some areas would make it faster and a little easier.

Moving the Smog pump to the front next to radiator cap took the most time. Total time listed
in the documentation is 1 hour. That I would have to see for myself.

Overall the instructions were very good but some of the images hard to see clearly.

I wish they would have included a piece to cover the large void created when the stock
intake plenum is extracted. (See pics) Now the engine cover does not cover everything.
It makes for less work on some things like changing plugs though so thats a plus.

I tried to take pics that show the meat of the work. And what needs to be done to get
a good outcome. My test drive on the finished product went very well. No CEL and no issues.
I get a nice throaty sound from the intake, And a nice smooth power band without that sudden
spike in power at 2500 rpm the stock intake made. This setup sounds good - works great
and takes several hours (at least) to do if you have never installed one on this type truck.
I got this from Extreme Terrain and the cost was $299. part number 75-5100
This kit comes w/ the pre oiled filter (RED) But you can opt for the dry filter version.
The replacement filter part numbers for both are listed on a sticker that comes in the kit.
I will warn you now - Some of these parts fit together very tightly. I had to use silicone
grease on some of the rubber connections to get them to budge when adjusting everything.
So be prepared to do this (PRIOR) to assembly. See pics below :

Since the stock tacoma is already essentially a cai what’s the benefit of this?

Absolutely Nothing. No MPG GAINS, HP GAINS, ZIP. All there will be is noise and more noise, and in the end noise.

I have an Airaid CAI and went into it pretty much expecting that.
I have lost about 3mpg since installing it as I really like the noise and said noise keeps my food buried in the pedal.
I can't solely blame it on the CAI as its a combination of that, the 6spd manual with URD shortshift, and 4.30 gears with Trutrac.

:facepalm:And people bash skewp hoods for having no actual performance benefit but think nothing of paying money for a cai that has no performance benefits.

The question remains to be seen as I was getting 19 mpg stock. That was my normal drive habit.
So I will check after I need to fill up again. The big difference is that the stock setup is very restrictive.
The intake tube is full of ripples that disrupt airflow, The stock plenum shown in the photo with the filter housing
removed ( white looking media ) is very dense. So air has to pass through the filter and this tight woven wall of mesh
before it can get to the throttle body. This new setup is polished inside and has no restrictions and runs straight from
the intake at the fender directly through the filter and into the TB . This is what makes it work better.
I installed a similar setup on a 2003 frontier 3.3 liter v6 And this one is better than that was.
I've only driven 10 miles with it and can already notice some difference - Big ? No ------ subtle - yes.

I fully understand some of you are not believers in this science and consider it a waste.
I have been working on vehicles at this level for years with improvements in performance
across the spectrum of motorcycles - jet ski's -cars - trucks. Through RestoRides MotorSports
And many happy customers are convinced it works.

It is what he wanted and not what you wanted. There’s that. As long as he is happy. Your opinion has no bearing to his truck.

it is a “how to” write up. Not a “should I do this mod” write up.
No money is ever wasted if you enjoy what you spent it on.

If you put side steps on your truck would you say it helped it to be a better vehicle than before ?

Some people may say nope they are going to hit the earth when I try to cross that stream where we go fishing.
So I got to take em off. Same with tires. Some are good for some people some are not.

As stated above in post #8 and #9 I like what I've done and did not pay somebody to do it. I do all my own
work that I'm able to do on all my vehicles. I've been a customizer for a long time and done a bunch of ground up builds.
All of that was fun and so is this. So yes I'm happy ---some are not ! I'm good here. . next question please :annoyed:

I’ve never understood this highschool mindset. Who can’t afford a cai? No I just wondered how a group can complain about a functionless hood scoop yet fawn over a functionless cai.

Alright. So. All of the truck owners that have done intake mods and dynos and the many which have been posted in my N/A or F/I Dyno thread are posted photoshopped graphs?

What about all of the people whom have datalogged their OEM ecu's with various intakes, and have shown increased MAF g/s? Are they falsifying their findings? The data-bank of most of those logs, can easily be found in the HP Tuners thread.

Obviously not all intakes are the same. A lot of you gents need to do a little following, just simply ask around, catch up, and quit eating the soylent green. :hungry:

Just the size in volume and shape of the air box itself on stock vehicles can change the engine dynamics
to produce more power at lower rpm's. The terms "Ram Air" is not snake oil or useless terms.
Forced induction adds to this function with high velocity. Those tubes you see on turbo's are all
very smooth with free flowing bends. The reasons are numerous. And obvious.

Intakes are fun. Installed a volant with ram air scoop not too long ago, I felt like it was the only variant besides the URD true cai that would give me a tiny bit more benefit than non ram air scooped intakes. Alot of my friends into automotive tinkering like to bust my tacoma friends balls that their trucks dont feel quite as quick as mine.

The volant, along with 3* camshaft gears, exhaust delete and a urd calibrator transformed the vehicle. Sounds great and feels even better driving.
My friend has an 07 OR 4.88 35" taco and I pull a few truck lengths on him
I pull a truck length on stock Chevy 1500hd 4.3L
I am dead even with F150 ecoboost

No dynos or anything here, just a guy enjoying some cheapo mods and a slightly modified power band. If anyone gives you chit about your spending habits, tell them to write you a check and you'll spend it however they want.

Yes this was last night. We were taking a left turn and i could hear his truck in a low gear and he was building boost, right when we straightened out we gunned it from about 20-80. I was dead even with him and let off, I was very surprised as they are ultra quick, especially on stock tire setup. I imagine if I regeared I may be a bit further ahead.

When I was completely stock, i pulled on a friends v8 f150 but that was to be expected as he is fully armored with winch and 37's. haha

I know old thread but OP when you installed did the rubber hose on the fender side of the box fit into the existing air intake draw hole?
