So TW, I’m feeling pretty bummed out right now. I’m 23 and never owned a 4x4 vehicle before, upon buying my truck I took it out to the beach several times, I got stuck once in sand/clay that was up to about halfway to the wheel, rinsed it off at a DIY car wash as best I could after I got pulled out and thought that I was good. Today I get a call from the shop that I’m getting 5100s, 887s and a Wheeler’s AAL installed they tell me about rusty front end components on my truck. I am not mechanically inclined at all but is my truck ruined? What’re the chances of dealer warranting this? Bought the truck brand new, currently has 15K miles. I feel like shit rn expecting to hear the worse

Just added the photos they sent me. Said tie rods are most likely rusted too. :(

Did you give it a good hose-down every time you went to the beach? Beach sand is full of sea salt and that shit eats trucks if you leave it.

Toyota warranty covers penetrating rust only to my knowledge and this probably won't qualify.

That’s a brake caliper. They ALL rust to hell and back if you don’t clean and paint them monthly. I wouldn’t worry about it unless you’re looking for a garage queen show piece.

Unfortunetly nuts and bolts arent really painted or anything to prevent rust. The caliper may be rusting a tad faster than expected but all else looks normal.

I do the best I can. I never take the wheels off I just hit it with pressure washer from underneath. I also live in hot ass Houston Texas so no road salt here.

The shop called me and told me the caliper/rotor might seize in the upcoming year? What does that mean?

Really depends on the dealer but I think you will have a hard time on a warranty claim for something rusty but not failing. It does look like more than I'd expect, but wheeling on the beach will do that. I'd just be prepared to replace a few components a little sooner than you usually would.

Just curious, but is it just suspension stuff that rusted? How's the frame look?

Edit: if the caliper seizes the Piston that compresses the pads sticks. I wouldn't replace it until that happens.

Sounds to me like you need to find a different shop. They’re trying to sell you parts you don’t need. You could pop those off, clean them up with a wire brush and an air hose, hit them with your favorite color rustoleum, and they’ll hold up...for a few months, or until after winter. Then they’ll look about like the do now again.

Frame looks good/normal. It’s just what I posted and maybe the tie rods, they didn’t send a pic of those :(

I’m afraid the dealer won’t even want to touch it because of the modified suspension....I don’t know what to do

I wouldn't worry about it too much. No need to get twisted up over something that won't need replacement for years. You should see some of the rust we get up here in the Northeast lol.

Hit it with some kroil and a wire brush. Problem solved. As for the caliper, wire brush and hit with duplicolor ceramic caliper paint. Heres mine before and after. 1022181632.jpg 1022181740.jpg

How would I go about removing everything? Would it be like replacing brakes? So I know what YouTube video to look up.

If you can replace the pads, you can do what I did. Just unbolt the caliper, punch out the slide pins and remove the pads. I stuffed a grocery bag in the middle part to protect the boots then sprayed it with maybe 3 coats. Bolt it back on and reinstall the pads. Easy peasy, dont even have to worry about compressing the pistons.

The 2nd picture I guess was the tie rod. I don’t know jack sh*t about cars...does that need to be changed ASAP or am I good for a while?

I wouldn’t worry one bit about anything you’ve shown man. I’m really PO’d about this whole thread...not at you, you’re trying to do the right thing...at the scum shop that’s trying to scare the money out of you.

Letting a tie rod rust like that doesnt affect anybody but the alignment tech later down the road lol. That rust has no ill effect on its functionality. And honestly, if you spray some wd40 or similar oil on them and brush them real good they might come out looking like new.
