Had my BAMF front bumper for my second gen powder coated recently. I noticed recently in the wings there is some rust running from the seams. I contacted the metal finisher and this is what he replied:

"Powder will cover and wrap around almost anything but where there are seams that are not welded all the way water will find its way in and bleed no matter how much or how many times you powder as water will find the least path of resistance. Any seams that are not welded sold and or capped water and just moisture built up from being in the sun and cooling overnight will eventually bleed off."

Makes sense to me, but what do I know. For the wise out there, does this make sense or should protest a bit.

I know its not much, but it enough to annoyingly catch my eye.

Absolutely no way to keep that from rusting without welding it fully before powder coat.

Damn. That's frustrating. Anything you might recommend to keep that at bay as a maintenance therapy or to clean it up occasionally?

Clean it good and run a bead of black silicone on it will slow it down for a while

They could have coated that. It's more work because tight areas like that tend to repel the charged powder particles, but if they had hot flocked those areas it would have been covered and not rusted.

That's a horrible idea. What time?
I have similar issue on my sliders with the deck plate hits the bars. I recently cleaned up the rust with a gel rust remover (spray on) and washed it off. I put tape over the top of the area and hit it from behind with with a "rust converter" primer and re-sprayed it with satin black the same way. Seems to have covered fairly well, but it's only a week old, so we'll see. If you can get it from behind, the paint shouldn't show too badly with the powder coat.

I'd do this, then when everything has dried, hose the ever livin crap out of that seam with cosmoline.
