Hello fellow TW members! Recently joined the Tacoma family and have been loving it so far. However, I feel like I made a major mistake and it's been eating at me for the past month now...

After i got off the lot, a few days later I took it to a shop to get it undercoated with the infamous Ziebart rubberized undercoating due to living in Michigan and having to deal with salt. Sadly, this was one thing I didnt look into before having it done and it seems like there is a lot of negative reviews and opinions on it... So I wanted to hear advice, opinions, and testimonials from people that have had this done.

Inspecting the underside it seems like they did a good job, however I wanted to ask you guys what I should do. Do I....

-Keep the coating and do the annual touch up every year and maybe touch up areas myself if some parts crack/fall off?

-Would fluid filming OVER the rubber coating be a dumb idea? I wouldnt doubt it but I'd like to hear peoples thoughts.

-Unrealistic... but remove as much of the coating as possible and do oil based coating instead.

Thanks everyone. I'd love to hear about anyone that's had this done for a few years and your thoughts! Any suggestions are welcome. Planned on keeping this truck 10+ years but we will see if I rust through the floor boards before that...

Thank you. I've dug in this thread for some time but havent really found an answer about fluid film over the rubberized coating. Also, I've seen the video of the guy digging around the Silverado and its rusted to crap. Alot of people just send me that video and say rubber undercoat is junk.

I've heard people say that they have had it done and it's worked for them, it seems like it all depends on how well it is applied.

I made this thread specifically for rubberized undercoat and not the other alternatives. Also for some advice that maybe other people, like me, can find easier.

My understanding is, the rubber coating is awesome, until it has as light crack or some gets chunked off. Shit then gets in and becomes trapped under that awesome rubber coating. I wonder if an oil based spray could seep through the rubber coating? I am going to think no, but I think it will start to break it down.

I’ve used Ziebart for decades on new and used cars/trucks.
Worked like a champ on my FJ’s (08,12) and unibody cars.
The key is returning yearly for inspection/reapplication.
My dealer said ‘not good for framed vehicles’. I said bullshit.
I never used fluid-film on Ziebart-ed vehicle. Never saw the need to.

My old explorer (2000) had it applied when new. I never touched it and the frame and wheel well area that it was sprayed on are still near perfect. Now areas that didn't get it are rusted out. I live in Chicagoland so also see a lot of salt. Either I got lucky or it works. Think the problem is when people apply it over areas that have already begun to rust.

On my taco I'll be doing fluid film.

I also have my truck undercoated. I have not had my truck up on my friends rack yet this year as he was working on his 47 chevrolet truck. His truck is now done but I am recovering from knee surgery. I am also considering fluid filming over the undercoating. Last year there were no issues with the undercoating showing any cracks. If the fluid film softens the undercoating that may be a good thing. I also have to do my other cars with fluid film. I hope I can walk soon.

I actually just got my truck line-x underneath and they did an amazing job on the frame. I would recommend doing it first thing and then that’s it. They don’t go over everything so the. You can do your fluid film for those other locations that you want to hit but maybe aren’t really necessary. Just an idea.

You live in an are where there is high usage of road salts. Toyota is releasing a campaign to do frame sprays to coat the frames. Plus extending the warranty of the frame. Don't do anything until you have the spray done by Toyota. Having an aftermarket my effect the warranty extention.

I just got my notice in the mail from Toyota yesterday about the upcoming campaign.

    Welcome to TW!

Im in the same boat, i got it done when i bought my truck. A bit over a year now, and it still looks great, its soft and not cracking anywhere.

Im not sure if i did the right thing or not but i guess time will tell. Curious to hear other members experience.

Edit: i got the vulcanized rubber coating done at toyota dealer, yes i know.. If that makes any difference.

I think OP and me are the only 2 smart guys on TW that got that shit done haha.

I wanted to keep the truck for at least 10 years, so thought was a good idea. Toyota said its a 10 year warranty, so we will see how it holds up. Also curious if some type of oil/fluid film can be applied over it.
