I’m in the market for an affordable Tonneau cover and I came across the rough country tri fold tonneau cover . It’s on sale for 699 on Amazon rn , Has anyone had anyone bought one or has experiences with them? I used to have a backflip on my 3rd gen but I bought it used , I can’t justify spending 1200 on it new , thank you guys !

Rough Country is alright. I have their seat covers on my 3rd gen. Their tonneau's have been revised over the last couple of years and I'd say their quality is comparable to Bakflip for a lot less. I have the X4s on my 3rd gen and will be replacing it again soon with something cheap.

I'd recommend buying it directly from Rough Country as opposed from Amazon. Amazon isn't an authorized retailer for a lot of items they sell. Some reviews say parts were missing, ect.

I bought the RC tri fold cover over the OEM one. Fit and finish is surprisingly top notch. All the parts were high quality. Only thing is a bit of adjustment to get my power tail gate to work, but it wasn't a big deal. I didn't want to enlarge the drain holes in my bed so I used some some brass hose reducers with the drip hose and stuck them down the stock bed drain holes.

Water does get in near the tail gate, but that's not a fault of the cover. If you look at the gap between the taillight and the tailgate, you can see right into the bed.

For the $ , I felt the cover is worth it and I'm generally not a fan of RC stuff.

Listen to this advice, I ordered mine from Amazon, received it last night and immediately had to box it back up and it's in the back of my truck now going back to UPS. The mounting rails were missing, the drain tubes were not there either.

Whoa that sucks! Was the box previously opened?

My box had nylon straps and the straps were also taped over.

It was. I think they sent me a returned item. I called RC and they were going to send me out a replacement but I think I'm just going to get a Bakflip. I liked the one I had on my previous Tacoma.

I installed their roll-up hard cover on my 2025 TRD Sport. Overall, it's a nice cover, but I think it needs some refinement to be marketed as specifically for the 4GT. Seems the only thing they changed to fit these trucks is the side rail mounting system, but it has some other short comings that need to be addressed.

The concerning part though is that I pointed these flaws out in a review on their site and they chose not to post that review. That's big red flag in my opinion. Reviews should be candid and unsolicited or filtered. Otherwise, they are meaningless. I posted the same review on the product on Amazon and they couldn't remove that one.

Hey, i'd like to read your review to see if the shortcomings align with what I see. Any chance you can post it here?

This is exactly what I posted on the Amazon listing.

NOTE - this same review was posted to this product on the Rough Country website and they elected to not show it on the site. This is underhanded and manipulative on the company's part. BUYER BE WARE!

I purchased this from a local authorized Rough Country dealer. The cover itself is nice looking, but it needs some serious refinement to be marketed as specifically for the 2024+ Tacoma. It was well packaged, although I still found minor damage to one of the side rails. I didn't want to wait for the dealer to get a replacement, so I chose to live with the minor flaw.

There are a couple of faults in the overall design. The straps that secure cover when rolled use a carabiner to attach the strap to the anchor point. The shape of these and design of the strap allow the carabiner to rotate, making it difficult to reorient it so it can be attached to the anchor. Additionally, the buckles on the straps don't hold well, creating a concern that they will loosen over time while driving.

The real issues with this cover though start when installing it on a Tacoma specifically. It appears the only change made in the design so it would fit these trucks was to the brackets that attach the side rails to the truck. Rather than using a clamp as shown in the install video, an aluminum block with bolts designed to slide into the bed track rails is provided. The bolts for these need to be about a 1/4" longer. It was VERY difficult to start these bolts after installing the block in the track. I actually had to wedge an allen key behind the block to hold it closer to the bracket so I could get the bolts started. Even then, it's only catching a few threads when tightened.

The side rails should be beveled at the front corner so they do not leave a sharp point overhanging the front of the bed when installed.

The rear brackets for the side rails need to be positioned an inch or so further forward. In their current position, the cover cannot be adjusted back much to make certain the rear gasket is in contact with the tailgate without pushing the end caps out of the bedside tracks. This makes it very likely this cover will leak around the tailgate.

I actually had to bend the rear corners of the side rails up to prevent them from gouging the top the tailgate when closing.

The included drain tubes, which rather than rubber appear to be cheap plastic similar to split loom without the split in the side, are not long enough to reach the drain holes predrilled in the bottom of the Tacoma bed. Additionally, the holes in the bed are far too small to fit the provided tubes and would need to be enlarged. This is not mentioned in the instructions.

Overall, the fit and finish of this cover, relative specifically to the Tacoma, show a significant lack of refinement in design and testing. All of these flaws should have been immediately apparent to the designers the first time an install was attempted on one of these new Tacomas. At $700, this is far from the cheapest cover a consumer can buy, and I would expect better from a well-established company like Rough Country. It feels like this was rushed to market without adequate consideration for its design. Pretty disappointing.

I bought the RC trifold tonneau cover. I like it, no issues whatsoever. It fits great and install was quite simple. Hardest part was lining it up front to back - which was not a big deal.
I bought through RC and got it for around 650. Amazon is a crapshoot sometimes.

Wait, this doesn't sound like the hard tri fold cover?

No, as I mentioned in the first comment, this was the hard roll-up cover from Rough Country. It was meant more to speak of the brand than the specific model. Sorry if that caused some confusion here.

Ah, the OP is specifically asking about the tri fold cover. As I mentioned, I am not impressed with their products, but the tri fold cover is excellent. I doubt they even designed and made it. Most likely a private label product.

I nearly ordered Bakflip as this is what I had on the frontier and really liked it. But the Rough Country price is more attractive!

Regarding the powergate, was it not closing right with the cover closed? Did you need to move the cover a little more back to get the power to latch?

I originally had the RC rail clamps too close to the tail gate, and it was causing the cover to sit tighter than it needed to be. All I did was move the rail clamps a few inches back so the cover isn't so tight where it meets the tail gate. Everything has been working perfectly since install and I am very happy with the cover.

I ordered the hard tri fold with the prop rods. It’s an excellent piece. As mentioned the lower tailgate requires the cover to be adjusted a bit. BTW I found out an old amp bed extender from my 08 tundra fits by adjusting the width of it. Saved some $
