    Howdy Y'all,

I'm about to get a retractable aluminum bed cover for my 2021 Tacoma, I've been doing a bit of research and I'm leaning towards the one that Rough Country offers (https://www.roughcountry.com/produc...gXj_VCj75Zo7gUD4yeXOgoPeNxuUxBbRoCyOcQAvD_BwE). I've read that Retrax are the best but I'm not quite willing to spend that kind of money. This one is $1000 which is in the range of what I'm willing to spend and it seems to have good reviews, do any of you have any personal experience with it?

Not a Rough Country brand, but I have a Pace Edwards canister tonneau - bought it in '17 when I got the truck. The only drawback with this style of cover I have noticed is that it can freeze in current position (open or closed) due to extended weather conditions. Example: last Friday I had to get my heat gun out and use it on the lock set and around the edges to unthaw everything. Hadn't been above freezing temps for about a month and it hadn't been opened during that time either. Didn't take long with the heat gun (700 degree max setting).

If you don't live where temps/snow/ice would be an issue I wouldn't think there would be a problem with a canister cover.

Lucky for me I live in Southern New Mexico, cold isn't a huge issue here. It gets below freezing from time to time but it's never that bad.

Look forward to hearing your review of it. I looked a the retrax pro in person on a Tacoma. It's a really nice cover but didn't want to spend $2500 on it. I went with the leer folding cover. After 1 year with it I'm not impressed. Let us know. The only drawback with these is the lost space from the canister.

I looked at the Peragon covers because they don't have canisters but I've heard that they have some issues with things getting stuck at the back when you try to fold it up so I figured I would suck it up and get one with a canister. I'll be sure to leave my review here after I get it.

To me at least, the canister only takes up about 1' lengthwise (got a 6' bed) and 1' of height (from the top of the bedsides). I can still slide stuff underneath - maybe 8+ inches high (never measured). Mine has locking stops about every 1' of length so it doesn't have to be fully opened or closed to use it.

It is NOT watertight, but a lot of the problem is at the tailgate and not the sides.

Update: I got the retractable Rough Country cover, it was a massive pain in the rear to install because the instructions were worthless, had to just figure it out myself, that being said, now that it's installed I'm very happy with it. Seems to be a quality product.

Pace Edwards instructions were the same - they sucked!!! I called and talked to a guy who said an engineer helped make them - all they had to do was say: the distance from point A to point B needs to be this much instead of a bunch of bullshit measurements that were worthless. Once I found out the needed measurement it was easy.

ALL companies that send written instructions should hire a NOVICE who knows nothing about the product to see if he/she can understand the instructions or not!!! This would actually make the instructions worthwhile. Anymore, I give the instructions a quick once over and then trash them and use common sense to build/install whatever it is.

If you’re serious about the soft cover, depending on what RC wants for shipping, also look at Tyger. Mine is identical to RC from their photos, minus the yellow webbing handles. Tyger gets free shipping from the jungle even to Alaska somehow…
