I just purchased 2 of the mounts that are supposed to fit in the rail and they don't. The metal piece that slides into the rail is the wrong size and does not lock the bracket in place

Ya I bought two for a 4gal can. Didn't fit. I called and emailed rotopax and got no response. I ended up cutting into my rail and dropped the nuts in long ways to mount it.

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you, even when filled with 4 gallons of gas, the rotopax container still stays right there and does not fall off. It does however come off much easier than the outside ones, just keep that in mind.

Good to know! I have a pair of the 1.75 gallong gas to mount on one side of my bed rack, and want another pair of 1.75 gallon water packs for the other side. I will design it so that I can add more packs to the INSIDE of the rack if and when I need the capacity (total of eight packs). Right now I carry a square 3 gallon jug for water and it works fine, but I have to allways tuck it into a corner and tie it down. Last thing you want is a 25 pound jug slamming around into everything in the bed of the truck on a gnarly trail. The secured rotopacks end that problem. So far the weight up on the rack has not been an issue.

Know if rotopax makes any mounts to fit on a regular roof rack? I've got one set up in the bed of my truck and wouldn't mind having some mounted to it. Heres what i'm talking about

Absolutely love this mount, I need to fit these under my tonneau as well, is there any possibility you could post up every piece of material you used to make this mount for the three gallon tank? Because I'll need to make two of em' lol

Figured I'd share my experience with Rotopax here. When I bought my truck it had two Rotopax mounts on the Frontrunner roof rack. When I tried to take the containers off, I found that only one of the 3 locks worked. The keys on the other two would go in and turn the lock a tiny bit but not enough to unlock the handle. Since the mounts were attached to the Frontrunner, there was no way for me to remove the mounts without unlocking them. I did a quick search online and found this youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5DoFRXXY7I and forum thread: http://advrider.com/index.php?threads/video-rotopax-fail.698250/

Since it seems like other people have had the same problem, I called Rotopax to see what they recommended. No answer so I left a voicemail and then sent them this email:
    upload_2015-12-1_20-44-30.jpg

That was on September 24th. After 3 weeks I got impatient and tried to drill the locks out to get the containers off the roof. I ended up drilling through the water container before I got the first lock off. At that point I was pissed and just twisted the crap out of the containers and got them off. :frusty: So essentially the locks are worthless because anyone can just rotate the pack and get it off...

I then sent Rotopax another email on October 15th, obviously a lot more upset this time:
    upload_2015-12-1_20-48-10.jpg

Now, over two months from my original call/email and 1.5months from my last email, I still have yet to get any response from Rotopax. On their website, they claim the locks have a lifetime warranty, but what good is it if they do not respond to emails or calls?

In my opinion, these packs are nothing other than an expensive accessory to make your truck look "cool". I'm just glad I found out in the comfort of my driveway instead of when I needed gas somewhere on the trail. I've never had any issues with my $15 5gal Walmart gas cans strapped down in the bed! Your experience is certainly unfortunate. I've had Rotopax for a while and I do know the locking mechanism can get tricky, I lube mine regularly.
I personally would never have attempted the drill, you could have unbolted the mount entirely via the bolts on the back and the locking handle would have slipped right off. The locking could then be replaced with the non locking Deluxe style handle instead.
Their lack of any contact back with you is certainly surprising and unusual in my experiences

What is the point of the locking mount if you can do that? Just curious because I am buying a mount for my swing out right now haha.

Well it depends on your mounting position. If they're fixed mounted to something like a roof rack (or another location without readily available access to the back) then you'd almost certainly have to take the roof rack off to get to the bolts... thieves would be deterred.
However if mounted to say a swing out tire carrier arm, or the side of a bed rack then there is easy access to the back side and the locking mount would cause a would be thieve to have to open said tire carrier or jump in the back of the truck... Might be enough to deter a walk-by grab. But certainly if a thief doesnt mind sitting around for 2 minutes and undoing the 2 bolts on the back of the mount the locking handle is no deterrent at all.

Yup, I definitely don't recommend trying to drill the lock if it gets stuck unless you know what you're doing. It's definitely not as easy as it looks on youtube lol. Still not sure how else I would've gotten them off without drilling though. They were on my Front Runner which would've been a pain to get off, and even then they were attached to the tracks with slotted nuts, which were inaccessible because they were covered by the Rotopax...

Regarding the locking issue, I've also heard the locks are useless if you stack multiple containers because you can just rotate the lock handle with the outside container.

I wish someone made a mount where it would slip into your hitch receiver and drop down when needed like a bike carrier. Nothing heavy, enough to hold maybe two packs. I keep my eye out for maybe a used bike rack then chop and place a plate to hold the mount, but have not come across anything yet.

I like the idea of it being outside my shell and not on the top of the truck.

Which is the correct part number to order for a bed rail mount for a 2016 Tacoma? I'd like to install a few at the front of the bed below the rear windows. These mount low enough for most covers?

    Thanks
