Anyone on here running a roof top cargo box like a Thule or Yakima?

Went shooting/camping this weekend and had 2 dogs in the back seat and coolers, chairs, tents etc. in the bed. Not planning on running a tonneau cover. Would have been nice to have extra dry storage in a roof top cargo box for sleeping bags, back packs, shot guns and other things that I want to stay dry.

I know these are not as cool guy as some overlanding bear proof crates bolted to a $1K basket but would be pretty functional as dry storage to free up cab room.

I drive 30-40K miles a year so the wife dailys the Tacoma. Not trying to have her park a full size pickup in DT Seattle everyday. Lifes a compromise lol

Another worthless post? You have so many quality posts juxtaposed with so many shitposts. Come on, at least offer a productive suggestion.

Lots of people have great luck with the Plano cases. They're cheaper than a Pelican case, which is usually the go-to for this if you're not putting a carrier from a minivan up there.

https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/42-plano-case.486409/ is a great thread, some pictures in there and lots of info on where they're cheap.

That's a lot of stuff to have to pack in a little truck. I have two hunting dogs and I'm at about my limit with the Tacoma (in more ways than one)...for now it'll work but the days are Numbered

What about a set of Voodoo bed bars with a cargo box from Craigslist? I just put a set of the bed bars on mine and have been watching for a deal on a cargo box. BTW not my truck in the picture but that's the setup I'm looking to recreate.

Thank you I will browse through that thread. They look really nice, I will most likely be picking up several for guns! I wanted the cargo box for backpacks etc.

So far it works for us. We had an F250 when we moved to the house we are in now but its an old house with an alley driveway and it was a 3 point turn every day to get the truck out. Got really old lol

This may be a decent solution but was hoping to see some up on roofs. I was looking at the Rocket Box 12 which is 3' wide and 5' long and 16" tall More compact and square than the huge long ski/snowboard boxes. With the new latch style mounts they come off easy so would only be up there when additional storage was needed.

I just got the Yakima Showcase 15 for my wife's Highlander, but i intend on sticking it on top of my Tacoma (Prinsu Cabrac) at some point. It was great on the recent trip we took. I fit a fullsize suitcase, midsize suitcase, plus 3 other bags of stuff, with some room to spare.

None of those cargo boxes are going to seem durable (the plastic is pretty thin to keep the weight lower), but if you take care of them they should last.

A buddy of mine has a Thule one (i don't recall the specific model), and its been put through the ringer.

Here's my thule just a couple weeks ago mounted on a rhino rack pioneer rack. It sat a little forward for my taste but that was the fault of the rack rather than the case. It's one of the biggest ones and it fit a suitcase that will easily be overloaded the 60lb limit for airlines, a smaller suitcase, a big back pack that had my stuff, a caught, a sleep8ng bag and a bag of random stuff my wife had to bring along. Before we left, I was worried about it flying off the top of the truck or it snapping in half due to the load but it held together our whole trip to Idaho and back including about 75miles of dirt roads. They're ugly but if you need the extra space they are worth it. The bed was full of camp8ng gear and a dog fwiw

Dude I know right... I ignored him for that reason. Actually, I just browsed back through his posts and literally could not find 1 positive comment. Good way to bring the moral down on the forum negative Nancy..

Back to OP's question. I'm actually thinking about the same thing. Once I get a rack I am leaning about towards some cheap Plano or Monoprice cases to bolt on top. Deck it out with Pelicans if I ever win the lottery.

I have moved an older Yakima Rocket Box (long and skinny) across many cars over the past 20 years and it holds up well, probably way overloaded a lot of the time. It's great not just for skis, but for bulky light camping stuff like sleeping bags and tents and clothes, so you can keep heavy stuff like water and tools and coolers down low. But, I haven't tried it on the Taco yet. Whether mounted in the vehicle or not, it lives outdoors and has held up to UV and weather very well. It doesn't do great things for MPG or wind noise though.

I had looked at pelicans after people posted above and just cant stomach paying $4-600 to protect several backpacks of clothing, sleeping bags and my wifes memoryfoam pillow lol I did check out the Monoprice cases and those may fit the bill, they have a couple large ones for $200. I could purchase 2 of those for less than the cargo box I was looking at. Looks like there are some convenient roof rack mounting options out there as well for those types of things. I guess those I could toss in the bed, on the roof etc. Kind of a direct knock off of Pelican but im not going to be transporting camera equipment to Zimbabwe via attack helicopter so we should be okay.

Thank you this is what I was looking for, pretty much looks just like my truck as well!

My Yakima Space booster on shell with Thule bars and track mount has been on various vehicles for over 8years now. Currently running 50" or something like that bars so we can use the box and two kayak mounts. I may cut the ends back a little.

Plastic is starting to fade but mechanically it's solid. I've used it mostly during that time for windsurfing sails and booms. Salt water soaked sails put away mostly wet have not taken a toll on the internals yet. Wet snowboards and skis...no problem. My dogs live in luxury in the bed with the shell on their dog beds and other camping gear. Box is easy to remove when I need to park in a parking garage...just take it off before heading to the city.

For those that might be interested in a Rhino Rack Cargo Box and wondering what it looks like on a Tacoma...here's a couple shots of the Rhino Rack Zenith Z86 (RMFZ86) cargo box on top the Pioneer platform rack. This is my first time owning a cargo box and we got it for a big road trip up through the PNW. It was key to keeping gear organized and out of the back of the truck. We are loving it so far and it looks much better than I thought it would.

Nice set up! I have a Yak skybox from a previous 4Runner that I plan to set up on my new canopy as well but I'm curious about the rolled up item on the back of the rack. Is that a rollout pop up tent? And if so where did you go to find it?
