Is there a published reference for the load capacity for the cab roof? I have read 100 lbs as supposedly specified in the Owner's Manual, but a quick search does not seem to support this value.

For reference, the OEM Roof Rack (PT27835170, link from Toyota USA) says to consult the manual, but the manual makes no mention of the load capacity either. On the other hand, Spark Parts lists "100-lb. load capacity", but a Canadian dealer lists "34 kg or 75-lb".

    2021 Manual:
    https://cdn.dealereprocess.org/cdn/servicemanuals/toyota/2021-tacoma.pdfhttps://cdn.dealereprocess.org/cdn/servicemanuals/toyota/2021-tacoma.pdf

I plan on putting a 7 gallon Yakima Roadshower in addition to my existing two ROAM 83L rugged cases, so I'm trying to find out what's the actual dynamic load capacity of the cab roof -- 75 lbs seems awfully low for supporting the roof cab.

I have read that 2 Yakima towers will get you 165lbs of dynamic load and a prinsu rack 300lbs of dynamic load.
On my Yakima roof rack I have been running 140+lbs for over 30,000 miles with zero issues, when I load 2 bikes on the roof for road trips I am near 200lbs on the roof.

I think were issues start to arise is when you go off road.

That's the rack though -- the governing parameter will be the load capacity of the cab roof.

The roof can hold over 600lbs when not in motion.
It's how the racks attach that limits dynamic load.
Yakima towers have 1 screw in each tower, Prinsu rack uses all 10 bolt holes in the roof.

Yes, that's why I'm assuming the dynamic load capacity of the roof translates directly to the capacity of the Prinsu roof rack.

300 lbs dynamic would great, but I am hoping for a reference that I can hold on to.

    Hah "static loading conditions"!

it had to get there somehow, and I’m guessing it wasn’t ever so slowly…

The roof can hold roughly the weight of a tacoma....

Now throw a roof rack on there and do it again.

Here is where Yakima says you can get 165lbs
    https://fitlookup.yakima.com/

ARB or Rhino Rack are big enough companies to have done proper testing and might have load ratings published but I doubt a small company like Prinsu will have a solid number they can give you.

So what is it that you want to strap to your roof? I'm just curious since you're asking about weight capacity.

I have a Prinsu cab rack with two 83L ROAM rugged cases. I plan on putting a Yakima 7-gallon RoadShower that weights 84 lbs loaded.

All in all it'll likely be around 170-180 lbs loaded.

Sounds like you'll be fine. A properly designed rack will distribute the loaded weight evenly on the strongest corners its mounted to. Prinsu seems to have this figured out.

I wouldn't worry about the load when on the road and if you do some serious off road just take out some of the heavy items.
I have yet to see a someone on here complaining about a Prinsu roof rack failure.

There is a guy in Australia on YouTube that over loaded his roof rack and it ripped the pop rivets out when off roading. It was a Rhino Rack that has you install a rail with rivets instead of bolts and he admitted it was his mistake for overloading.

Regardless of the capacity of the roof/rack, putting two bills of, sloshy, weight on the lid of an already relatively top-heavy, narrow, shortish-wheelbase vehicle seems, um, un-smart…

    just sayin’.

Ronny Dahl's video on his roof rack is what triggered this question.

    Hah touché!
