Does anybody run a roof cargo back on bed bars? More specifically on a short bed, but I imagine it is more common on a long bed.

I am looking for extra storage for luggage when I travel with the dog in the back seats. I know the obvious answer is a tonneau cover/bed cap. I was thinking with a cheap set of bed bars and a cargo box off of FB marketplace/CL it would be a cheaper way to have extra storage.

The current idea is C4/DRT bed bars, and a Thule Pulse M. The box should only hang past the top of the tailgate 4 inches or so. Also was thinking about wrapping the top of the box in Barcelona Red to match the truck.

    Thanks in advance.

    Happy Friday TW!

I’ve seen guys do this. Not sure if it was here or in the Real World. Works well enough.

That what I was thinking. Now I am on the hunt for the lowest bed bars that will close enough to mount the Thule box.

I run a yakima deep space box, provides a great deal of extra space.

I have the a set of the early kb voodoo bars, his new stuff looks better when it comes to rust as the new cross bars are now aluminum. Mine are all steel and have rust spots; eventually I will either re powder coat or get something that wont rust.

A buddy runs the Inno bed bars and a long Yakima box on a DCSB. He turns the box 'backwards' so the thick part is toward the cab and lets the rest hang over the tailgate. Good for his skis and such all winter.

I see this is an older thread, I am running a Pace Edwards Ultragroove Tonneau Cover with a Yakima 66" round crossbar setup. This allows me to fit both of my Thule Sidearm bike mounts and Thule roof basket on at the same time. I still have access to the bed by rolling up the cover and reaching things from the side. The roof basket is pretty nice and adds about a third of the cargo space with a roof basket bag (worked really well on my old Corolla Hatchback). Side note, the Tonneau cover leaked until I added some caulk to where the front of the bed meets the sides of the truck bed, gaps were there without the bed cover.

Amen, pup takes up the backseat so we needed some space to put things that aren't exposed to the elements!

I use a half width basket on my bed bars. I put plano sportsman totes in it then bungee net over it.

Are those ski/snowboard holders you're using for your rods? I dig the set up.

Yep, my musky rod is too long to fit in the truck or in a normal rod carrier. So I got ski racks, they are bolted to the cross bars then I just put the rods in. As extra security from the racks opening while driving I put velcro wraps around each one so they cant open.

Do the holders use the lock and key that is on the side? Or are the rods too big for the locks to latch? Or, are those the locks for securing the holders to the bars?

They do have locks, but since I got the cheap ski racks you can just smack the plastic cap with your palm and they open up even when locked. The plastic gets really soft in the sun so they unlatch themselves.
