    Hi all,

As the title suggests I'm looking into options on how to roll forwards an analog odometer from a 1998 2.7L Tacoma. The previous owner I purchased it from had to replace his instrument cluster around 140K miles, and he took it to a dealership and they gave him one with super low miles on it. Currently, it's sitting at around 40K.

In the hopes of just staying honest on mileage for the truck, and avoiding headaches explaining this to a future buyer if I sell the truck down the road, I'm wondering if it's possible to simply remove the gauge cluster and roll the dials physically to a more correct mileage for the truck? Or would it simply reset to what it wants to be at when plugged back in?

    Photo of my cluster below:

maybe you could add a sticker that says "+100,000 miles" ? No idea, but good on you for trying to do the right thing.

I'm shocked the dealer provided an incorrect reading.

I had a speedo/odo failure in another marquee around '90 on an '85 model. Dealer helped me get it corrected via a technical shop replacement, but they set the odo at the mileage the old one was at. State law and such.

I think you can work it out. That odo won't 'reset' as it's not digital.

    ^^^ This.

Seems like they could get in trouble for that type pf thing

I traded in my old 5 lug to a dealer when I bought my doublecab and I got a nastygram from a DMV "investigator" who was asking about the discrepancy (I had done a similar thing and replaced the cluster with a lower mileage one), even though I had disclosed to the dealer the difference.

I would just document the change in the maintenance records (back of the dealer manual type thing). Maybe even get a label maker and print out the conversion and stick it next to the ODO.

Yeah I was curious as to why he or the dealer wouldn't make it accurate for him, but we're in FL and the odometer on the title is "Exempt" so maybe they just didn't care?

I personally would just try removing the clear plastic and rolling it forward. Let us know if it works. Be gentle with the clips.

No. Don't tamper with the ODO.

Go to the DMV to find out the process to correct the mileage. There can be legal impacts if done improperly.

I think this is documented on the title.

The question on the title is "does the odometer correctly match the miles on the vehicle?" So either it does or it doesn't. Tampering isn't a factor.
