Alright guys so I'm wondering if anybody has some insight as to this potential issue or if it's just some sensor thing.

I have a mildly steep driveway.
    20180717_154348.jpg

When I pull up and stop, pull my foot off of the gas (without putting it in park), the truck slowly starts to roll backwards (weak stall or something), if I let it roll back more than a foot or so the truck jolts and I believe my Traction Control or some other sensor hits the brakes and I get an alert.

I've only done it twice, the initial time and one time after to replicate and see what the heck happened.

Can anybody offer me some insight as to what it actually is doing?

normal. Not enough power to hold the truck going through the torque converter so you roll backwards. The shuttering is traction control or one of those systems because I knows something isnt right when youre rolling backwards. Just keep your foot on the brake until you put it in park and have the parking brake on.

Thanks for the info I've experienced that a few times. Glad to know it's not something to worry about.

Next time hold your foot on the brake for 5 seconds and then release. Does it still roll backward?

Do you need to know, or care?
Yes it's normal. Sensors tells you are doing something wrong.

My truck doesn't do it, even on a much steeper incline than you driveway. I tested it for a post here.

On hills I routinely release the brakes and there is more than enough power to keep me still. Your driveway looks flat compared to what I've done it on.

It’s normal, I miss my 1st Gen for it not doing that. You haven’t tried crawl control yet, have you? o_O

No, it doesnt. Used to keep my AT 1st Gen in drive and would let it roll back slowly to get a second try at cllimbing a hard spot like a shelf or a patch of ice, and could do the same pushing the clutch on my older trucks, but now this nanny safety control forces me to put in in reverse to do the same thing. That’s not safe at all if you are climbing a steep hill because It makes it so you are only relying on your brakes to stop you and don’t have a second chance to use the engine as a brake if your Brakes dont hold and your Ebrake isn’t enough.

Doesn't your Tacoma have a very easy to reach emergency brake handle next to your right pant pocket? Also keeps pressure off your transmission park pawl.

Same thing, it activates the brake in any gear including N except for R if I let it roll back. Very unsafe for offroad.

It in’t a problem untill you need it. Like when the hill is steep and you slip on a shelf or rock and need to back up a bit to get a better line or running start but your brakes don’t hold because they’re hot, or one of your shocks leaked oil on the brakes, or there’s air in your brake lines, or you punctured one of them, or the brakes are wet, etc... that’s when it can be a problem.

A friend of mine had a brake failure clumbing a hill in his CJ when the engine died, they rolled back down head over heels and he broke his leg. It was a manual but he couldnt get it back into a lower gear fast enough and his EBrake couldn’t hold it either.

Anyways, that feature works fine for small hills, but keeping it in drive or low and feathering the gas to roll back a few feet is much safer than taking it out of gear to roll back when you are climbing up a very steep hill.

Yep, I was sitting on an incline waiting for a construction crew to finally let me go through. I was getting bored and there was no one behind me so I let off the brake and let the truck roll backwards a few feet to pass the time. When I gave it a little gas (maybe coincidental timing) a horrid clashing noise came underneath. Now that it is mentioned, it did sound like the crawl control was kicking in. I've only used that once, when on the initial test drive and the dealer was showing me the features.

This. OR and Pro are prone to this. The noises are exact same as when you engage crawl control. It has happened to me a couple times on my driveway. It never happens in traffic, but on some steeper hills I always hold the brake with my left foot and overlap on gas with right to get it going just in case.
