Will an engine start up and run if it is roll started (manual trans) with a bad alternator? I was always under the impression it would.

I thought that was just if the starter was bad. You talking about popping the clutch right?

With a bad alternator you won't get too far before the engine dies, if you have a fully charged battery.

For some weird reason, I assumed there was a flywheel run stator or something in the engine powering the essential stuff like plugs, ecu, injectors etc. And the alt was just for charging the battery and running accessories. Sucks if that's not the case.

How long would a vehicle run with a fully charged battery?

depends, are you driving at night or during the day?

id say during the day your driving time will be limited to 2 hours on a fully charged battery.
    night time-30 minutes

Its called bump starting... You will only be able to drive until your battery dies.. get a new alternator.
Bump starting only works for long distance driving if you have bad starter or dead battery..

Actually, it's called bump, roll, or push starting, depending on where you are and what motorsports crowd you're in. They're synonymous. :jerkoff:

If the alternator is toes up and you have to roll start it because the battery is now dead you'll be lucky to make it around the block. Other wise just twist the key.

Check my build thread...too much to list.
Let's just say I got maybe 2 miles on a bad alternator driving at night in my 03 tacoma 6 years ago. Not fun driving, I was on the highway and everything died and luckly I was able to get off the road. No hazards and it was pitch black out, not safe at all.

nope, most everything runs off the alternator/battery. If the alternator isnt overproducing/aka charging DC charge it runs off the battery until depleted.

Maybe some people should think about boats perhaps Air Boats

Once the Voltage in the Battery drops low enough the ECM goes into Hibernation mode to save itself

Here is the thing; if you can't start it due to bad alternator, it means that your battery is already low enough that it won't crank the engine. It may run for a while, but not for too terribly long, and nobody can tell you how long it will run for, since it would be based on a guess about just how dead your battery already is.

Cars these days have a much larger electricity draw than in the old days. Old cars needed pretty much just SPARK to run. Now you need computers and electric fuel pumps and electric fuel injectors and electric throttle gates and a million electric sensors.
