While we were gone for three weeks over Christmas, my wife’s Prius sat in the driveway and a rat nested under the hood. It chewed up a big harness to the tune of 18 hours of book labor and $5400. Insurance is likely to cover it, but I’m wondering if there’s any kind of spray solution to deter rodents in the future.

    Damned soy based plastics.

Some people have sprayed a pepper mix on their wire harnesses.

Honda makes a rodent tape that is laced with pepper

I have heard that camphor balls spread under the hood will deter critters. Worth a try.

I like the tape. Something topical seems like a good way to rub pepper in yours eyes, ears, or on your...

I've used moth balls to deter rodents from chewing on outdoor generator wires.

Dryer sheets. Mice don't like the smell and they stay out. I have restored several cars and had long term storage projects. They work. Buy a box of the sheets and place them (individually not just throw the box in) in and around the interior and engine compartment. Works great when storing your roof top tent also. WARNING...when buying...buy a fragrance YOU like!

Foil wrap will stop rodent chewing. Killing them will also stop them from chewing.

Mostly stock with a few minor mods.
My parents live in Northern AZ and used to have rodent problems anytime they left their cars sit for a few days. A local auto shop installed some kind of flashing LED light under the hood that opperates when the vehicle is off. Apparently works. Haven't had problems since.

Mint spray. Rodents hate it. Won't hurt if it gets in your eyes. Pretty tasty too if you forget to wash your hands before eating lunch while working on the truck and accidentally bare hand a tater chip. You can plant mint in your garden also to help keep them out the house and run squirrels off.

That too. But the neighbors don't appreciate gunfire over their backyard and i got the cold shoulder for days from my two daughters after the last assault on squirrel ridge. Besides my girl loves the smell of mint. Happy girl happy world.
