One thing that has me concerned, in a moderate T-bone where you will impact the cab enough to mess up the doors but not enough to total the truck, having sliders might be a damage multiplier making things worse. They could transfer all the energy to the frame, which is open C shaped and will bend easier if struck sideways as opposed to vertical. Then your cab may be protected (which is a good thing for passenger safety), but you can mess up your truck whereas without the sliders in some accident situations, the opposite would be true. But just a thought.

    Yeah.
I don't have pics, but the Westin tube steps on my old '04 did seem to reduce the damage when I got hit in it. It was not a t-bone, though -- I was sitting at a stop light and the Hyundai behind me got hit at an angle by a Sequoia doing probably 60, shoving the Hyundai under the back of my truck and cartwheeling it down the side. The tube step was bent pretty good, but I got no frame damage and only damage to the bed and rear of the cab. The Hyundai was completely demolished -- no intact glass, dash was knocked off and laying in the driver's lap, driver's seat broken, trunk completely folded in -- they had to use a crowbar to pry the license plate out so they could identify the occupant. He was OK, just really out of it and couldn't communicate his identity. I didn't see it coming and was surprised but perfectly fine and didn't even see the Sequoia at first, thought the guy in the Hyundai caused it. Drunk lady in the Sequoia just had a bloody nose, and thankfully missed all the other cars around. Driving drunk during rush hour, brilliant. It was on an access road, and people she passed on the highway stopped and walked up the embankment to give statements, said she passed them at at least 90, weaving like crazy, and they knew something bad was going to happen. Her lawyer tried to contact me a few months later, I refused to talk to her.

Anyway, you said you wanted stories. You're welcome.

The bill for my truck was $13K, it was less than a year old so they didn't total it. I loved my 1st Gen, but that truck had to go.

Would probably be less severe, with most of the energy being transferred to the frame, the frame should hold up as the force would be evenly distributed and the sliders would essentially make the frame more rigid. the other car would crumble around the slider.

Overall though it wont make much difference in a an accident. The slider will hold up, but everything else will crumple. They will probably hit the rear axle as well or the front and damage the entire suspension. Slider is probably just the least of your worries.

On a similar note, from my experience front "bumper guards" seem to amplify damage to both vehicles. They literally override the functionality of the bumper.

    Yeah.
Yeah, he was my crumple zone basically, poor guy. She might have been going even faster than 60, people that came up from the highway said she was doing at least 90 when she passed them. Her airbag went off, and all of her tires were ripped from the rims and flat, she's lucky she didn't go into a roll. Her vehicle was like 50-100 feet past where I was, which is why I didn't even notice her at first. The back of my truck was popped up in the air and knocked to the left, so my left rear tire was up over the curb.

In this case, the tube steps took somewhat of a glancing blow and seemed to reduce damage, but I can see how a direct hit may have the opposite effect. As a note, tube steps on 1st gens bolted to the frame, similar to bolt-on sliders but certainly less beefy. Unlike the steps for 2nd gens that bolt to the underside of the cab.

I’d be worried that the steps get bent upwards, preventing doors from opening and escape from a fire after getting pinned next to a cliff while a boulder about to fall teeters above me. Can I have a Xanax too? :)

I think OP’s and Taco Mike’s question is legit, you do have to consider how mods may affect your vehicle, albeit a reasonable consideration.

Ha not like I live my days thinking about it, but generally I try to keep in mind whatever longer-term issue might come up before spending the cash.

Hey - Thanks for this post, been looking for a local set of sliders for my 2017 DCSB, and this post just hooked me up with Ryan - my order is going in! Great shots of yours on his post, thanks Rog! :)

Anyone that thinks, grill guards, big bumpers,or sliders will help or stop damage in 99% of accidents is kidding themselves, usually they will cause more damage,I am a retired Battalion Chief and can tell you they do little too nothing too help in an accident.

Had a guy switch lanes right into my slider, hardly a scratch on mine, but messed up his fender and wheel pretty good. so lighter stuff: does help.
Had this happen a week ago:
White car turned left in front of me on my green. My bumper didn't do shit, tire took the whole impact. I was doing 50mph at the time. Now if I didn't turn and t-boned him then that would be a different story, probably a dead guy in the passenger seat of that crown vic...
