Roam roof rack cases, or other storage solutions

    Oh man…
I’ve been looking at throwing 2 of the 95L Roam boxes up on the roof rack to uncluttered the inside of the truck and the bed. I’ve been storing all the sleeping stuff, cooking gear, RTT annex, shower tent and clothes in the back seat area. It’s packed back there… Theft is always a concern of mine traveling around, so I don’t leave much in the bed. I have a pelican long gun case up there right now and it’s just too thin. I’ve been looking at the dimensions of the Roam 95L boxes and all of the stuff will definitely fit in those.

Question is, anyone using bigger sized cases like these on their roof racks? Hard to get stuff or not bad? Would you do it again or figure out another way to store stuff?

    Thanks for any advice!

I know they're not the cool thing but a used Yakima or Thule roof box will be much more aerodynamic and cheaper. Just a thought to consider.

The yakima or thule is such an obvious choice that no one (myself included) ever thinks of it.

But also, the ROAM are far more durable if you are going to really bang them around, right? Trying to justify a future purchase in my head.

Following to see what else people have to say. :)

When ever the need arises to find more storage capacity is the best time to revaluate what it is that you really need. One thing I do is to remind myself that there are people that are thru hikers and they can do it with a base weight of ten pounds. That is every thing minus food and water. Just to add perspective. An old philosophy of back packing is to choose the smallest pack that is reasonable, bigger just means more stuff. I would do what ever I could to eliminate putting things up high. The Tacoma is not the most aero to begin with. A bed rack with one of the Yakima or Thule containers flush with top of cab is what I would try to do.

I have a Roam 83L box in the back of my GX now that holds my Comp, recovery gear and tools. Its a solid piece of kit. I originally bought it to keep under the softopper in the bed of my tacoma. I cant speak to having one on a roof rack but the case itself is nice.

Potentially more durable for sure, a tree limb on a trail might not mess them up they're pretty thick(might also tear them off though).

Good points guys, I appreciate it. I should have mentioned I have a Leitner bed rack with an iKamper on top, it’s already higher than the cab. I really like having it up that high, allows me to walk under it when it’s open and I have the hi annex for it. Tons of room.

I’ve made a list of stuff that I’ll have in the truck and it definitely takes up a lot of room. I like having the comforts now.

I also get attached to shit, I want stuff to outlast me. That’s getting harder to find these days…

Had some big pieces of cardboard so I cut out templates to see how Roam cases will fit up there if I go that route. Almost like they were made for it…

Yes and yes! Drilled, 1/4” carriage bolts, silicon in the holes. Roams are the absolute best built boxes, weatherproof, lockable, and have struts.

Well, pulled the trigger on 2 of their 95’s and a 6.5’ awning for off the back. 6.5’ might be a little wide to travel with but I’ve seen a couple guys on here who made mounts to carry them on the side and when they need it bolt it on to the back. See how it works out.

“Should” have just enough room for the waterport between the boxes with modified brackets. Should…

A few other factors to consider though is:

How long are you going and how many people?
How comfortable do you want to be?

We manage to take everything we need in our truck without needing extra space but we could not take much more with us if we wanted to (good thing we don't have children or pets).

Only 2 of us, no kids or pets. I went extremely bare bones essentials for a long time because I had to, now I want everything I choose to take. I was thinking about a Leitner full length pod (or pods) but I’m going to start with the boxes. I don’t want to have anything in the back seat area (seats are removed) except personal bags and some munchies

Ended up doing the 95L’s, really happy with them. More room than I thought in the middle, definitely enough to throw the waterport weekender back up there.

    A bunch of junk
I took mine off because of a dip in fuel economy and its my daily driver.
I'm looking to get rid of my 95l in lieu of an 83. Let me know how your wind noise and fuel does with those big ole walls up there

Did an hour on the highway today, really couldn’t tell a difference. But I’m pretty deaf and there’s a lot of other things on the truck that contribute to wind noise. As far as mileage, again I didn’t really notice a difference. But again, lots of stuff that have run that in to the dirt also. It’s not my daily so fuel mileage hasn’t really played a part in setting it up for function. I really like the extra storage though!
