Is there any way to reduce road noise in my 2016 Tacoma. Will undercoating help or is there some type of insulation that can be applied.

I’ve used Boom Mat on a few vehicles and also used it on the back interior wall and front and back floor of my Tacoma. BoomMat is easy to work with, as it is soft and pliable. Its cost is less than Dynamat.

In addition to the BoomMat I placed some 1/4 inch foil backed cloth strand insulation under the carpet in the Tacoma. That was purchased at an automotive performance shop. I’ve also purchased it at Amazon before. Together, these two items made a difference in reducing noise.

I removed the back plastic shelf behind the rear seat to install the BoomMat along with placing it on the front and back floor by removing the plastic door entry sills. To get it under the carpet in the rear footwell, I cut the pieces into 9 inch sized triangles as larger pieces would have been difficult to put into place. I also removed the plastic storage boxes under the back seat bottom to place it on the floor there.

3/4 inch foil lined and adhesive backed engine compartment foam was placed under the hood. A 4 foot by 6 foot ‘open box’ piece was only $39.00 on Amazon. It was wrapped in plastic in an original box so probably just a return item. That made a huge difference in reducing noise when starting the engine and also reduces engine noise a bit while driving. I don’t particularly like the look of the pieces I cobbled together under the hood, but it works and I’m the only person that sees it when I do maintenance.

Previously I did my wife’s small SUV with a single piece of 1/4 inch insulation under the hood using plastic push in clips and it looks a little nicer.

I was then able to cram many smaller pieces of the 1/4 inch insulation behind the brittle stock firewall engine compartment insulation.

I have time on my hands. But all of this really did make a big difference in reducing noise. I like a quiet vehicle and it made the Tacoma more enjoyable to drive.

Not pretty, but it really reduces engine noise and injector clatter.
This thick insulation could be redone in one piece and attached with clips but I’m not entering any car shows.

1st pic: 2013 Rogue 1/4 inch thick with clips. It has held up well for over 4.5 years. Sound mat pieces underneath tried alone initially.

2nd pic: Tacoma, 3/4 inch thick Boom Mat engine compartment insulation with Boom Mat tiles underneath also tried initially without insulation. Installed 3 months ago. 34E097A0-521B-45D0-B75D-C1425FACA8EF.jpg FD17DAD1-74FF-47A8-9A6F-89E312888876.jpg

I used 3m professional rubberized undercoating. I used 7 cans to coat the bottom of the cab and went about 3 layers thick all around. Helped a LOT with road noise and tire noise, everything is much quieter after that. Cans are 10$ and some change a piece at Autozone but it works really well. I used the same paint for my sliders and have slid on the sliders and the paint survived that, FWIW. The stuff is TOUGH

Sure thing. This is taken earlier tonight.. about a year and three major snow storms I drifted through after I installed the undercoating! It's tough stuffIMG_20180129_174726.jpg IMG_20180129_174904.jpg

Typically I don't experience excessive road noise, but then again excessive and noise comfort levels are very relative... I might insulate the doors, whenever I'll decide to replace speakers, but for sure I'm not planning to remove carpeting to add more insulation (some people have done it)... spraying some undercoating like @stevotivo12 did, sounds like a much better idea.
I am experiencing road noise coming from the back of the cab, as noted in links below. I think I'll try to do something about that in spring or summer, if I'll find time for it...

Road Noise from rear cab vents..?

Road and air noise coming in through pressure relief vents behind rear seats

What did you undercoat exactly? I want to try this. Did you do the frame, or the bed or both? Thank

depending on where you live this kind of stuff accelerates rust by trapping moisture and salts next to the metal

I paid someone the first time, never had even heard of sound deadening until I walked into the shop.

holy shit it was expensive, so I did the next car myself.

I still do it myself but I think if you have the money it’s worth it to let someone else

You want to detail it first and dry it for good measure.
I concentrated mostly on under the cab to keep interior noise to a minimum, with a little on the inside of the frame as well. Have not had any rust issues yet

I have the money but, I am also restoring the car so I had to pull it all anyway and was like might as well do it while I am here and learn some stuff. It was a pain in the ass but worth it. Shop wanted like 3k. I was like um no

I feel mine got a big quieter after i cosmolined the chassis and underneath the cab. Plus just having a bed mat must of made some improvement. I don't notice the engine revving as hard when climbing steeper grades....sound more normal.
