This is my seventh Toyota truck and in my opinion, the loudest in terms of road noise. I've looked at what a few others have done with sound deadening mat on the interior and read that it didn't make that much difference in road noise.

So I'm considering having the underside spray with Rhino coating or a similar product generally intended for bed protection and wondered if anyone else has done something similar or what others think of it. I'm also considering pulling the bed so that the back side of the cab can be coated as well.

Start with the back cab from inside the truck. Made a big enough difference for me that I didn't need to do anything else. Tons of the threads on here about it.

I'm not sure where you're located, but if rust is at all a concern, I would avoid any permanent coating underneath the truck. Bed liner type coatings eventually crack and trap moisture against the metal underneath and cause terrible rot, and it usually hides itself until the coating completely fails and starts peeling off in chunks, revealing the rust underneath.

For sound deadening, there's only so much you can do, but if you do a thorough job and take your time, it makes a noticeable difference, it certainly would be better than any of your previous trucks from the factory. Doing the entire floor, front firewall (as much as possible), doors and rear cab wall will quiet it down. There are vents on the rear cab wall that need to still function (allows pressure to escape when closing doors) but some have added foam there to still allow it to breathe but quiets down the noise intrusion some. If you want to get real crazy, drop the headliner and do the roof after everything else. After that, there's only so much you can do because of the windows/windshields always allow some noise to get through.

Obviously opinions vary, and I haven't gone through the process myself (yet), but my buddy sound deadened his Tacoma years ago and it's a noticeable improvement in quietness and "solid" feeling, especially when closing the doors compared to my stock truck. Add some better speakers and road noise should never be a concern, as long as you don't add some big mud terrain tires.

I did read a few of those threads including one with lots of pictures of a job well done but as I remember, the poster said it didn't do that much for road noise. Do you have any pics of yours?

I live in Florida and for my first several cars in the sixties, I had them both undercoated and rustproofed with a the local company that had been doing cars, trucks and industrial equipment for many years and their undercoating never failed, either in allowing moisture to penetrate nor failing off. I have seen both those examples with other short lived rustproofing businesses though so am well aware of what you mention. The company I used sandblasted the underside before applying their coating which never really hardened and would tolerate all sorts of abuse without fully exposing the metal underneath. I have no personal experience with Rhino coatings but have seen many examples of their work and it would appear to be an excellent sound deadener. Most vehicles these days use rust resistant metals in their car bodies so I wouldn't be too worried about rust underneath a coating but am looking for those with personal experience.

Ah, gotcha. I'm in the midwest in the salt belt, and from what I've seen those coatings have a 100% failure rate in our conditions, but we also can go from 100ºF to -40ºF in a given year, which is tough on everything.

I'm not seeing a lot for search results on here for first hand experience but I'm sure someone has done it. Personally I'd look into something like Lizard Skin that advertises as a sound deadener vs. just using a bed liner product, I'd expect that you'd see better results.

i applied sound deadening material to the back of the cab, under the back seats and inside all 4 doors. it made such a difference, don't think getting the floor done would help much. The roll was about $70 on Amazon and included a pair of HD scissors and 2 rollers to roll the mat down once applied.

The products used back in the sixties were solvent based and very durable, unfortunately they were also considered to be very harsh on the environment and are no longer made.

Not applicable in Florida but modern road de-ice products are much more aggressive and continue to work at temperatures well below zero unlike the traditional "road salt" we grew up with.

The modern vehicle has a lot working against it from the rust prevention standpoint:
More environmentally friendly coatings aren't as robust.
De-ice chemicals are more aggressive and applied more frequently.
    Modern metal is thinner.

A buddy had the same complaint and sound deadened his entire Tacoma. He did it in stages. He said the back wall was the most bang for the buck. Then the doors. After that he ripped everything out and did the floors. He just got the roof done not too long ago. He told me to do the back wall immediately and anything beyond that would be minimal.

Would you have a link? This is exactly what I'm shopping for right now.

    Tnx!

This is what I used. Listing says 200 mil. It was about 1/8" thick if i recall. Doing the back wall+floor, and all 4 doors i used about 1/2 the roll.

Used a pool noodle cut in half to allow air flow for the vents in the back and did the back wall and under rear seats. I’m not gonna go any further, I think the glass is the issue. Wish it had acoustic glass like luxury vehicles.

used “Siless” from Amazon. For some reason I can’t upload pics

did you notice the wall vent pool noodle help mitigate sound in the cab? Any pics? I had music playing when i insulated the back wall, and I could clearly hear it coming through that vent.
